Q: How many devices does this actually support? i see it says up to 4x device capacity but 4x compared to what? what's the actual device capacity?

It says 4 x 1gb Ethernet ports. This means it has 4 each, 1gb ports that you can plug wired Ethernet devices into. It doesn’t mean 4 *times* device capacity.

Q: Can netgear 4-stream ax1800 be used as an access point with a nighthawk r7900p router?

Dont know of the r7900 functionality. but you could jack in to the router thru a wire connection to make adjustments. Or use the NETGear Nighthawk app and to do the same. But if wanted to go the long way using wifi thru the ax1800 into the r7900 it is possible with the Nighthawk app.

The router is exactly the same in each case. The difference in price is a combination of market variability, plus the hope that users will enable and keep the pre-installed version of the Netgear security software (the "S" in the product name, "R6700AXS"). This will generate revenue for Netgear, perhaps enough to offset the difference in price.
