Review: Breaking Bad will go down in history as one of the ... - Breaking Bad will go down in history as one of the most addictive and popular shows of all time. I didn't catch wind of the show when it initially came out, but when Netflix ads of it appeared on TV, I was more curious than ever. And then I caught a glimpse of the last episode pertaining to Season 1, and I became so enticed by it that I waited until subsequent viewings commenced before watching it from the beginning. Before I review the tin itself, I want to address some of the reasons why this show is so special to me. First of all, it has some of the most solid character building of any show I have ever seen, essentially bringing forth a regular family man in Walter White, and completely stripping him of all the ideals that he has came to know for most of his adult life, transforming him into Heisenberg. He went from being an underpaid and lackadaisical chemistry teacher to being the king of meth, and his character portrayal allows us to sympathise with his reasons for doing it, while keeping us conflicted by his methods. He is the most multifaceted character I have ever watched, and I am a film and game buff, so I know quite a number of characters in media. Secondly, it has a great set of characters such as Jesse and Hank, who work really well of off Walt in their unique ways, Saul, who really brings a different level of expertise to the business, and Mike and Gus, who both bring the show to some of its most exciting climaxes. To top it all off, the cinematography, pacing, acting, tension and drama are superlative, and I don't think there will ever be another piece of media that will resonate with me as viscerally and intellectually as Breaking Bad does. After watching it a couple of times on Netflix, I felt inclined to buy the full Blu Ray collection. I was stuck between the Heisenberg tin and Methylamine Barrel sets. I chose the former because there was just a lot more space for it in my collection. And I honestly wouldn't change it for any other Breaking Bad collection. The tin is so cool to look at, and the Heisenberg logo attracted me to it. It comes with some stickers that represent motifs and plot points found in the episodes. The special features are great, and there is so many hours of them (as well as some commentary on certain episodes and behind the scenes footage) , so any Breaking Bad fan should get their fix from this. I'd say the Half Measures bonus disc satisfied quite a lot of desired curiosity about the series, which made me ecstatic to see features spread among all the discs. The last thing I want to bring up about the blu rays are their amazing 1080p quality. The images are far sharper than on Netflix, and this really works really well to the show'a benefits since the camera work, locations and compositions were so meticulous that they commanded attention from me at every moment. The blu rays also have some footage that was left out of Netflix, so it is worth getting either this or DVD collection purely based on that. Overall, the tin is a wonderful representation of a truly special show. It has hours of features, sharp picture quality and little nuances from other collections that make it the just buy one for all Breaking Bad fans out there. I highly recommend it.

FANTASTIC SERIES AND AMAZON CAN MAKE SURE YOU GET THE REAL THING....THEY NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE!!
I hope that anyone reading the lesser "star" reviews will hopefully read this.... Unfortunately I have been the recipient of a badly produced set of this fabulous series which I had ordered as a Birthday present for a lovely widowed neighbour; it was a very bad let-down as it did nothing but skip, stick and jump on disc after disc. However,I got in touch with Amazon and explained it all; they were wonderfully helpful as they always have been in my own experience on the very rare occasions of my many years of using them,if I've had a query. This mattered more than most as it was to be a special gift for a lovely man who is now alone and I had raved about the series so much; he agreed totally on the little he managed to view but I was determined he should try to get to see it all properly....... After getting in touch with Amazon with a fantastic response from them,I'm now copying my reply back to them in order that some of the details might well help others who may receive something that does not play properly......I hope it helps and please do not lose heart or be disappointed; the series as a show in itself is marvellous and addictive....to have it all on a super set of discs is your right when paying a lot of money to do so. "Well, today I have receieved the replacement order for "Breaking Bad",the complete box-set.... I'm keeping my hopes up high that this will be a successful outcome and I've given the new set to my neighbour and obviously it will take him a little time to get to where he did in order to know that all is well this time. However....I am personally hoping for the best because of a very great difference between the set that arrived today and the one that filled my order of July 11th. The box-set I have returned was very, very markedly different; it was outwardly all dark green and shadows both back and front, just as it should have been but it was all that and nothing else other than the logo of "Breaking Bad" on the front of the box. The lovely-looking set that arrived today was dark green, shadowed and the rear of the box had photo-clips of the series which was totally missing from the first set...added to which,on the front of today's new order, there was both a red and a blue "18" certificate logo in both bottom corners, entirely missing from the first set.....as well as a silver "UV" sticker at the top of the box, again, not on the first set. Therefore,I'm hoping against hope that this new set will prove to be very different as I rather have my suspicions as to my returned order. Such a sad shame as if there are others who have received the badly defective set for a lot of money, they may well be deterred from ordering a replacement not to mention the fact that so many prospective buyers read the reviews before buying and could well decide not to risk ordering. I hope this might help Amazon into investigating whatever may be going on in the selling of a very, very popular series as it is so unfair to disappoint people who look forward to a great many hours viewing. I'm now just hoping I hear only good and happy results from my elderly neighbour...I had to wish him a second HAPPY BIRTHDAY today when I gave him his second set so I do hope what seems to be the "real deal" truly is just that!! So,so very many thanks to you there for such quick, helpful response to everything and what looks to be a very happy outcome and here's hoping I will not be needing to be "breaking bad" news again on this item, lol!"

Very good box-set for a great series!
*This review is of the actual DVD box-set.* The series: Breaking Bad is about a chemistry teacher who, when diagnosed with cancer, decides to cook meth-amphetamine, in order to provide for his family. The actors are great, the story is gripping and always unfolding in front of your eyes. Top notch! The picture: The video of Breaking Bad is quite good for DVD. The DVDs never contain more than 4 episodes per disc, usually fewer, so there is plenty of room left for the encoding. The quality is almost the same throughout the series, exactly what you'd expect for a series produced in HD. Breaking Bad is a very visual series, and these DVD transfers do it justice. The sound: The spectrum of this series is pretty wide and on DVD the 5.1 mix included on all discs is worthy of a movie. Not every episode is all action and explosions, but even those episodes excel at selling the series' mix with with ambiance, music and clear dialogue. The entire series has English subtitles, some seasons include SDH subtitles as well. Other languages vary from season to season. The extras: Here's where the deal's at. This set, despite not containing the now sold-out exclusive bonus disc on the Blu-Ray barrel release, contains a load of extras. The box claims a total of 50 hours of special features; more than the actual series' runtime. Each disc has more special features than some other series has on an entire set, including audio commentaries (on a lot of episodes), Inside Breaking Bad-mini-documentaries for EVERY episode, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, mini-episodes, alternate endings, the extended Season 4 finale, every episode uncut and much more. Overall, it would have been nice seeing the 2-hour documentary included in the Blu-Ray set, but this package really delivers the goods, more so than many other series this length. It delivers a special features package that lives up to the standard of the series - and that's an achievement in itself. The packaging: The Complete Series comes in a hard card-board, glossy finish case which holds the 21 discs in six folding cardboard sleeves. The box itself has the title embossed in silver writing on all sides but the bottom and the back, with green smoke around it, the spine and front being slightly raised. All other text is on the piece of paper, which was wrapped around the box. It comes off easily, in case you want to keep it. The box has no closing mechanism, which means it stands a little open after a while. The individual seasons are stored in their own thinner card-board case, with each disc sliding out of a card-board sleeve. This has caused scratches and unplayable discs for some, but I had no such issues. They all have a green design added to their spine in order to fit into the set, but otherwise carry over the widely varied designs from their original individual releases. The insides of the volumes are similarly varied, with the only thing in common being the episode guide that appears above each disc. The Season 1 volume holds 3 discs, Season 2-4 holds four discs each. Season 5 has, like its individual release, been split into two volumes in this set; Season 5 and Final Season. They each hold three discs, for a total of six discs. Overall the set looks great, the series is brilliant and the bonus material is engaging, well produced and most of all, plentiful. It's great for any collector who doesn't already own part of the series on DVD. Recommended!

great item and a great show for a great price.
great item and a great show for a great price. i love the show and will say it is well worth watching, my only issue with this product is due to the cardboard sleeves the discs come in. comes in a beautiful tin that contains the full box set in a beautiful hard box case which is also magnetised, but i opened that box to find some pretty flimsy "cases" (if that's what you want to call them). they are pieces of cardboard in which have slots cut to slide the disc in, they have amazing art and are well presented but i would of much preferred some slim hard cases that held the discs firmly than these cheap card inserts. my issue is that i have previously owned cardboard cases and they tend to wear and break easily, they can quite easily rip if you push the disc in too much and if you don't push it in enough your disc comes flying out. i will recommend this over the standard edition as it is not much more in price and contains a bundle of extra's, it is the same product as the standard but also comes in a tin, with magnets from the show,a making the final series documentary and a free DVD copy of the first series to give to someone you might think will enjoy the show. i would also like to point out this contains the UV redemption code so you also have your free digital copy that you can watch on your mobile, laptop or any other device that is able to stream the show online. i like to download when i am at a WiFi point so i can also watch the show when i am offline and unable to access any sort of internet services. i give this the 4 stars due to cardboard disc holders but i also highly recommend this product to anyone, the show is amazing, it contains humour, action and drama that touches some really deep and questionable decisions one can make in life. in my opinion this is a flawless show that comes to you in near flawless presentation, i also love how the interactive menu's on the disc are presented.

Better Late Than Never!
It's extremely difficult to add anything to the high praise already given to this superb series especially considering the nearly 1100 five star reviews on Amazon. However I just had to add my "two pence worth" as I have been just "knocked out" by how good Breaking Bad is. I am a very late, late comer to Breaking Bad as I did not see it when it was broadcast in the UK. I heard all the hype but just let it pass me by really. "Yeah, yeah another cult US series, so what?"..... "So what?"...." So where have you been?" When the complete series came down to a reasonable price I decided to take the plunge and I am so glad I did. I have not completed the whole thing yet but I have "binged" my way to the start of Season 4 now and I have to say it just keeps getting better and better. An incredibly original idea with a huge story arc that never lets up and continues to surprise. How is it possible that we can feel such empathy for someone who gets deeper and deeper into the world of seriously nasty crime. Brilliant writing, superb acting and wonderful production values that's how! Empathy yes, sympathy no and don't think for a minute it glamorises the world of drugs and drug dealing as it most certainly does not, no matter what some reviewers might have you believe. It really does deserve it's "adult" rating though so be warned. As for the presentation of the DVD's I do agree with some of the critics and am disappointed with the cardboard sleeves and flimsy box but this is a minor fault in my opinion. The fabulous quality of the show itself more than compensates. Another minor quibble is with the same frequent boast of many box sets "over 50 hours of bonus features". Hmmm....there is some good stuff there but some of the interviews, commentaries are a little repetitive. Many of the interviews/behind the scenes stuff appears to be the broken up remnants of a much longer documentary and to lump trailers for other shows as a "bonus" is pushing it a bit.

The 8th Barrel
Obviously I am a fan of the show, I don't think anyone who wasn't would have pre-ordered the special edition box set at a cost of at least £30 more than the standard box set when you already own the 1st 5 series on dvd and have already watched every episode several times. This is probably the case for most owners of this barrel, you wouldn't buy this set on a whim, this is a collectors item for existing fans of the show. Unless you bought it so you could resell it at a profit once stocks ran out, but that would make you an awful human being. The barrel itself is a nice touch as although it isn't the most iconic prop from the show (only coming into play in the final season), it does play a very important part when it is used and it is probably the best suited prop to contain disks. It is nice and sturdy with a hinged door in the main part of the barrel and the disks held between magnetised plastic plates and grouped by season slotted into little shelves inside. There are plenty of extras, most of them were already on the existing individual box sets, though some of the dvd versions we had were missing some of the commentaries - the most notable being season 4 which had none, thankfully they are all here. There is also an extra documentary about the making of the final season which is on the top lid of the barrel, we haven't watched it yet, but will undoubtedly enjoy it when we do. Probably the best thing about the set as a whole is the little details, the description already tells you you get a specially made coin and a los pollos apron, what it doesn't tell you is that the apron is packaged between 2 pieces of card with pictures of money on so it really looks the part when you first open that lid. The coin is nice too, I had already seen what it looks like in the pictures, but it is obviously good quality and is nice and weighty. Another nice little detail is the plastic cases around the disks, they have little images printed on them that are relevant to that season, but what I didn't realise straight away was that they each part has a detail of one picture which will come together with the disks removed. All in all the entire set is a fitting tribute to what is probably the best tv show ever made. Keep it, cherish it and watch it repeatedly for the rest of your life.

Literally Breaking Bad
Simply the greatest of all time this show, a piece of an amazing experience will drag you into the world of Walter Hartwell White. It shows the incredible change, on a man who transforms into a straight antagonistic villain. Here is a quick synopsis By the start of the show: to the viewers, Walter White is clearly seen as a unhappy middle aged man. He has a dead end job as a chemistry teacher, but works a second job in the carwash because he doesn't make enough money: and his life hasn't turned out as imagined. His former friends have surpassed him in everyway, his two former friends are using his experience and knowledge making billions of dollars in a company called Greymatter (he dropped out for unknown reasons): while Walter is stuck in the middle-class society breaking down. His breaking point was when he passed out in carwash, when he woke up: the doctors told him the worst news ins his ife. He had gotten CANCER, and he would only live for atleast 2 years. This, being the final slap in his ''pathetic'' mind, Walter immediatly knew that he would leave a family without a father going bankrupt: a son with special needs, a wife, and soon to be daugther... Walter had gotten an idea. Yesterday, he was shown by his smacktalking DEA brother on a video of how much Meth dealers made (the DEAB brother in law busted them) and Walt saw in the video how much money they made.... With this, the show goes onto The dangerous part of Walt's world. Walt teams up with former student Jesse Pinkman to COOK METH. yes, meth. With Walts experience in chemistry: Jesse and Walter start a crazy methdealing partnership. This is where everything gets interesting. As the show flows, from season one to two, to three, to four and to the final days of this saga, Walter gets the most incredible character transformation. He turns into a meth kingpin. This show is amazing, and you NEED to watch it. The show has amazing characters too, with bob oderkirk as Saul Goodman, Giancarlo esposito as Gus fring, RJ Mitte as Walt's special needed son, Anna Gunn as Skyler White, Betsy Brandt as Marie Scrader, Dean Norris as Hank Scrader, Aaron paul as Jesse Punkman, and finally Bryan Cranston as Walter Hartwell White A.K.A Heisenberg.

Recommended!
Initially, I did not like this series, because the the first 3 episodes, in particular, were too gory. In addition, for me, much of the first two seasons were boring. The characters were not doing things which were of interest, to me! So, I found the first two seasons gory, gritty, and largely-boring. Yet, commencing, in season 3, the gore was mostly-implied, the suspense built, and I started to get hooked. As already alluded to, however, this series is not suitable, for all ages. Along a similar vein, this series will probably appeal to fans of "The Sopranos", because the main characters are bad people. So, audience members will find themselves rooting, for bad guys. Regardless, the stories were well-written and the acting, directing, plus editing, were very-good! In addition, and as already alluded to, I surprised myself. Although, for the first two seasons, I did not like this series, later, I wanted to see more! In particular, I found myself wanting to buy and watch the spinoff: "Better Call Saul", because I really got to liking the corrupt lawyer, "Saul", in "Breaking Bad"! Yes. Saul was about as bad as his mostly-evil clients, but he was a largely-loyal hard worker - and that was a quality I found appealing! In fact, the "Breaking Bad"'s main character - who was bad, too - also had some good qualities! He was, for instance, very good at 'thinking on his feet'! So, it was really interesting to see how he got out of numerous 'tight' situations! In addition, despite all the bad things he did, the man was, in various ways, repeatedly trying to redeem himself; he was trying to stay true to the 'good person' image he ultimately supported and thought he had or, at least, hoped he had. Thus, from a perspective, it was a tragedy that this good person was, essentially, forced to 'break bad'. Yet, such was just one of many 'tragedies' that the character encountered, while struggling to, eventually, do the right thing - which repeatedly eludes him! I can understand, now, why "Breaking Bad" won lots of awards, but it IS an 'acquired taste'! So, if you're looking, for something, that will likely turn you off, in the beginning, but leave you critically-thinking about underlying subjects, long after the show is over, then this series will probably be a good 'fit', for you! For example, it would not be a 'Spoiler' for me to point out that "Breaking Bad" dealt a lot with America's "War On Drugs". I found it interesting, though, how, given that such a "war" was, in real life, born from bigotry, what grew from the despicable ignorance - despite, in this case, the episodes were fictional! I think they were fair comment! Also, I wondered if the main character deserved greater compassion than what he got. At times, he actually WAS 'fighting the good fight'! So, I suspect that the answer is 'yes'. Another tragedy?
