Master Studies II by drummer and educator Joe Morello is a challenging percussion technique book for players seeking greater control, precision, and hand development. Designed as a continuation of the original Master Studies, this workbook presents progressively demanding exercises focused on refining touch, accuracy, and rhythmic spacing. It is not a drumset coordination method, but a concentrated study of hand technique that benefits classical, jazz, rock, and rudimental players alike. Written in clear standard notation, the material is intended for focused practice with a metronome. The studies emphasize spacing notes evenly and developing rhythmic accuracy through disciplined repetition. While several exercises may be adapted to the drumset, the primary goal is strengthening control and independence at the hands. It’s built for daily technical work and steady, measurable improvement over time. Morello’s approach encourages patience and thoughtful practice. Some studies are intentionally demanding, guiding drummers to slow down, listen closely, and build clean execution step by step. Over time, players experience improved consistency, smoother rebound, and greater dynamic command. For teachers, the book provides structured material for advanced students ready to move beyond foundational exercises. For serious players, it serves as a long-term technical companion that sharpens precision and musical confidence. Song List No songs included. This workbook contains progressive technical exercises for hand development and rhythmic accuracy. Whether used in private study, conservatory training, or professional practice routines, Master Studies II remains a respected resource in percussion literature. It supports disciplined learning, prepares drummers for performance demands across genres, and makes a thoughtful gift for committed students dedicated to refining their craft. Review: Master Studies 2 - Taking this book in stages, started with it about 3 weeks ago. After working with Master Studies 1 very thoroughly, this book oddly enough seemed a bit easier (but maybe thats because ive only been into about the first 30 pages) however its not really easier just different. This book seems at least in the early stages seems to have exercises that are a bit more musical and longer bar patterns with flowing triplet patterns in lots of paradiddle formats. The first 3 pages are warm up exercises that has help my single stroke roll tremendously. Anyway, you can start with this book first or Master Studies one first, it doesnt really matter, but having both to work with will keep you busy for many many months. Just make sure you read the dialog he writes before each exercise explaining what the purpose of the exercise so you can understand how its suppose to sound. Morello was the true master of teaching hand development and getting creative ideas out of your brain and into your hands, this book is beyond worth the money, I wouldnt even be able to put a price tag on either version 1 or 2. Just make sure you do all these exercises with a metronome. Review: Great Book - Joe Morello was a great technician behind the kit. The exercises in the book will help you to develop better chops and give you the ability to play great licks on the kit. Any drummer who wants to play at a high level and not just play a groove, should have this book along with Master Studies I, Stick Control, Accents and Rebounds, and Charley Wilcoxon's The All American Drummer 150 Solos. I've been playing many years and know that it is essential to have great hands in order to be a great drummer. You should be able to execute anything that comes to mind. If your hands are limited, your playing is limited. Get a practice pad and get those books I mentioned and you'll be in good drumming shape. Your playing will stand out when your hands are developed.

Master Studies indeed, from a true master drummer
for drummers of all styles who want to increase their hand technique, look no further. Joe has complied a great book of exercises aimed at increasing hand control, speed, endurance, dynamics and offers valuable insight into his thought processes. If the serious drummer spends some time with this material on a daily basis, he or she should see noticeable improvement. I would recommend this book for any drummer of at least intermediate level with at least basic reading skills. Just listen to Joe's 60 years of recordings with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and others, if you need any further proof that this is a master drummer whose teachings are invaluable. MB

A must have for serious drum practice.
I have the first one and I use it all the time to stay in shape. When I saw this addition I bought it without hesitation. It it different but just as usefull. I can already feel the benefit and I have only started into it. Another timeless and style agnostic book from this great drummer.

Chops Development
Joe has done a great job of putting together some very challenging exercises designed to help you develop speed and accuracy. Mixtures of single, double, tripple and quad strokes are put in a variety of time signatures, including odd quarters and eighths, with accents in some very difficult locations. This really requires keeping mental track of where you are in each bar and is highly instructive in that regard alone. I highly recommend that you get his first "Master Studies" book before this one as I found Master Studies II to be much more challenging. Thanks, Joe.

Next level playing...
This book is for accomplished drummers who want to take it to the next level. You can play along and do the exercises slowly, but to make these sound like he intended them to sound like you have to be a really good player.
