Poles measured 1 inch across the outside of the top of pole. Fit perfectly. I watched a few videos on how to build the shelving which saved me lots of time and frustration. There are grooves on the poles and grooves inside the lock clips. Make sure they are facing top of pole. Put one side of clip on pole slide it up till you hear and feel the clip engage the pole. Then add the other side to it..done!! Decide where you want your shelves. Make the ring on the pole ..on each of the 4 poles and set the first shelf. Nice to have help but my poles are one solid piece 86" with 4' shelves and heavy. I am old, but I planned and I measured and after installing each shelf I took a break and did something else. I had to climb a ladder and I have bursitis in one hip...and yes I am a little bit crazy...but I got it done. Great product, affordable and I was able to reuse very old heavy duty expensive shelving that was given to me 15 years ago. good luck if these clips do not fit your pole ...you ordered the wrong size...no tape needed, just the pole and the lock clips.

I wasn't sure what I was getting. When they arrived I noticed they were not as brittle and gripped the metal legs much better than the original clips!
