From the legendary Studio Ghibli, creators of Spirited Away, and Academy Awardยฎ-nominated director Isao Takahata, comes an action-packed ecological fable about the clash between nature and human civilization. The tanuki (raccoon dogs) of Tama Hills find their fun-loving community under attack when their quiet woodlands are threatened by encroaching developers looking to create still more houses and shopping malls. Desperate to survive, the tanuki band together and learn the ancient art of transformation, shape-shifting into a comical variety of humans and spirits as they undertake a last-ditch plan to scare away the humans and save their home, in this deeply affecting, funny and heartfelt look at what it means to live in the modern world. Review: Good movie - Great movie. Love Ghibli!! Review: Love for Raccoons - This is a classic Ghibli film with a very heart felt and rather sad story. Ghibli has a great balance of hearty happy ending films versus stories modeled after historical or factual events, Pom Poko falls into the latter. Thus, this film can be hard for children to watch as it's even hard for me to witness the death of so many animals - but it's a story that needs to be told and watched again and again, this is why Pom Poko is a must-have film for your collection. It comes with necessarily timed humor and is voiced by several Futurama voice actors for the English version which made me love the film even more. I highly recommend this film, and in blue-ray for the price!

A prodigious production from Studios Ghibli. (Blu-Ray Combo)
Of the famous Ghibli duo, Takahata is too often the one who remains in the shadow of his colleague Miyazaki. Of all the titles offered by these two giants of Japanese cartoons, Pom Poko is one of my favorites with its superb animation and its symbolism of the situations, during this amusing story of the Tanukis who confront humans to regain their territory. A success without a shadow of a doubt!

Studio Ghibli is the best!
This movie is definitely not child appropriate, unless you're okay with your child seeing these Tanukis use magic with their testes. It's a funny movie overall and now me, my husband, and cousin have a great inside joke from this movie!

Very localized Japanese story that somberly blooms after repeated viewings.
An interesting Ghibli offering has mythical raccoon dogs see their environment encroached on by humans, they attempt a variety of techniques to stall development and win back their space but ultimately humanity prevails. Bittersweet and somewhat overlong, repeated viewings do increase the eco awareness and the somberness of the subject matter. Have both the GKIDS and Disney BDs, can't recall if the newer release has better subtitles vs. dubtitles. Regardless, the picture quality is very good on the BD.

Interesting
Very unique movie, the kids loved it and had no idea what was going on.

Tanuki balls. That's all you need to know.
These Shout Factory releases are much better quality than the earlier Universal ones, and the subtitles particularly on this release are much better than the Wildbunch/Netflix ones, which are partially adapted from the original subs and dubs seen here but are true to neither.
