The Awarif Ul Ma'arif

This text by Suhrawardi is considered one of the two most important classic manuals on Sufism (the other being Hujwiri's Kashf al-Mahjub or "Revelation of the Mystery"). The translation is clear and concise, with the English translator having received much assistance from a middle eastern scholar who, fortuitously enough, just happened to be a Sufi, lending to both accuracy and spiritual insight in the rendering of the text from Persian into readable English. I purchased a brand new copy of the hardcover volume, and as inexpensive Indian bindings go, this one is very good. And for less than $10, that's hard to beat. The Awarif Ul Ma'arif

It is a valuable piece for those interested in the foundations of sufism and the intricate aspects that relate to being a shaykh as well as a talibe/disciple. This book is a manual for daily study and practice that was written by our illustrious Shaykh 'Abu Hafs Umar al-Suhrawardi. The Awarif Ul Ma'arif is a rare treasure chest of wisdom just like The Mystical Philosophy of Ibn Arabi by A.E. The text itself is a treasure - a translation of a classic manual on Sufi practice and traditions. But the print job was substandard. This is a book manufactured in India from a PDF and printed in a very slipshod fashion. I have to be grateful that it is being kept in print, and the price was right. It is painful to see such a precious text treated this way.

The introduction makes it clear that the translator is either clueless or just hostile towards Sufism, which renders the rest of the book untrustworthy.

Ancient text on Sufism. Describes every term in depth. Very concentrated information is provided by the Master. References from Quran quoted at every level. It's a book anyone trying to understand Sufism must have and read. Of course it does not describe the steps to make one a Sufi. It needs a Sheikh. The print is a bit bad. And the English and vocabulary is a century old. Need to open the dictionary 3 to 5 times per page.
