Fresh & creative quilts that start with 2.5 inch strips!
Excellent book! With clear directions for making 13 quilts, starting with 2.5" strips (also called "jelly rolls"), this is a fresh and exciting book. I love buying jelly rolls because they are usually from one designer and have coordinating fabrics (you know that the prints will all work beautifully together). In the past, most of the patterns using these strips of fabric are very similar. This author, however, has put together all new and creative patterns that I haven't seen before. Note: the author often uses 2.5 inch strips of the same color (just different shades). The quilts would be difficult to deal with a "jelly roll" pack (a coordinated pack of 2.5" strips from a single fabric line). I recommend this book. Please mark if you find by review helpful. Thank you so much!

Beautiful Quilts Well Written Patterns
This is one book that I will be making ALL of the quilts inside. The photography and styling beautifully shows off these gorgeous quilts and the pattern instructions are very well written and easy to understand and follow. I enjoyed the forward with tips from Susan Ache on how to sort and store the 2 1/2" strips so that they will be USED. A must have book for any quilter's library, from the beginner to the advanced! I hope that Susan Ache will be working an another book soon!

This books contains many great quilt patterns. One may use 2.5 inch precut strips (like a jelly roll) or cut own strips to use scraps. I hope to start making one soon.

Strips Get Stretched To New Lengths With Fresh Flair and Fun
It’s difficult to use negative-ish words like “futzy”, “uniform”, and “daunting” to describe Start With Strips by Susan Ache – and still express how outstanding the projects are. But here goes: Nearly every quilt has a sameness to it; some approach tedium and monotony if you think about the sheer numbers too much. Nearly every project uses diagonally-set blocks, sashing strips, and repetition of the same block in alarmingly rigorous counts. Futzy-ness enters with some exacting measurements down to an eighth of an inch. And yet Start With Strips is full of zest and vigor. Susan Ache takes familiar formations and stretches strips to new lengths. Her unconventional results make the book stand far out from the many, many books utilizing pre-cuts. Ache’s use of color and design to re-interpret traditional parts make the sum truly sumptuous. Take, for example, “Airboats” (77 1/8” x 94 1/8”). It is fun and scrappy yet very orderly. It’s sort of an exploded Dresden design, but without the required precision. The advantage to all those sashings around each on-point block equates to no seam matching. Yet it is still quite labor- and attention span-intensive: 128 of the same blocks need to be repeated. Then there is the extraordinary “Stargazing” {81.5” x 81.5”). 23 star blocks are set on point with 184 of same sub-blocks (including mirror images). Templates and 1/8th inch measurements add complexity. Oodles and oodles (56) of setting triangles require careful point matching within each row. The numbers really add up in “Citrus Grove” (72” x 72”). Its zesty use of solids and prints takes your mind off its inherent challenges: stretchy bias and repetition. Nearly 1000 individually cut triangles are required for the 384 half-square triangles. (Which could be vastly simplified using layered and hand-marked speed-cutting/piecing.) ~ ~ ~ Any special tools needed? ~ ~ ~ 1. Easy Angle (for half-square triangles) OR plastic/vinyl sheet for provided template 2. Easy Dresden Tool OR plastic/vinyl sheet for provided template 3. Acrylic Ruler with 45-degree marking Highly recommended for all skill levels. Beginner’s will build skills and precision from all that repetition. Sashing strips galore provide a hidden benefit by easing up on exactitude when joining rows. And Susan Ache’s designs will make you overcome and overlook all those daunting numbers. Nice. Really, really nice. Comes across beautifully in Kindle format.
