Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing: 1 (Fudge, 1)

I've just read this aloud to my eight-year-old son. It's the first in a series (warning: "Superfudge", which is book two, reveals that Father Christmas/Santa does not exist!), and is set in early 1970s New York. Peter, the fourth grade nothing, is beyond exasperated with his three-year-old brother Fudge. Whenever Fudge acts up, he is called on to help, to cajole, or even to take the blame. My son found Fudge's antics very funny - there was a description of a birthday party filled with equally Fudge-like toddlers that he particularly enjoyed - but he also empathised with Peter, having a naughty little brother of his own. Judy Blume's streak of psychological realism runs through this, even under a lively children's story for 8+ years. Peter regularly steps in to reflect that he is being treated unjustly in comparison to Fudge, because he is the "good son", and not little and cute, and will stand on his head in the kitchen to encourage Fudge to eat, and not snap back when his mother blames him for Fudge falling off a climbing frame and knocking out his front teeth. Eventually though, Fudge's naughtiness becomes focused on Peter's pet turtle Dribble.... and that is going too far.

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH I WILL WRITE THE HOLE REPORT IN CAPITAL LETTERS THERE ARE TWO BOYS ONE IS CALLED PETER PETER HATCHER HE IS WELL A FORTH GRADER HE HAS AN ANNOYING LITTLE BROTHER. CALLED FUGE. HE IS VERY ANNOYING I LOVE THE IDEA OF AN ANNOYING LITTLE BROTHER . BECAUSE HE REMINDS ME OF MY LITTLE SISTER.....AKA DEVIL KID . 👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾 IT IS REALLY GOOD STORY BECAUSE ITS FUNNY ITS GOOD WELL 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀 👏👏👏👏 CLAP CLAP CLAP TO JUDEA .... I remember reading this at school. My 6 year old son is enjoying having it read to him at bedtime. He thinks Fudge is hilarious!

Adored this as a child and now my kids are loving it too.

My 8 year old thought this book was fab! I wanted to buy the follow up but apparently it reveals that Santa is not real. Thank goodness for Amazon reviews! This book produced many giggles though and reminded me why I loved reading Judy Blume myself as a child.

My eight year old daughter has become reluctant to read books lately, luckily I remembered how much I loved the 'Fudge' books and I bought her a few to try. She finds the language easy enough to read independently and loves the story.

I love this book. I read it as a child and I am now reading it to my children. They are finding it really funny and enjoying it as much as I did. Judy Blume really knows how to capture children's imagination.

One of my absolute favorite books growing up. So pleased that my daughter feels the same way. Now to buy the sequels for her, she hasn't stopped begging for them since finishing this one!

A brilliant childhood memory! I'm thrilled that Judy's books are available on Kindle! They don't write books like these anymore.
