Bass Compressor Guitar Pedal, Optical Circuit with Attack/Release/Ratio/Tone Control & Bypass (SCYLLA R-27)

Believe the hype this works great. I was used to virtual studio compressors so when I bought a bass one, the Lax comp by Donner, I wasn't sure what to do and couldn't get a sound I like with just attack release and two volume controls. This having a ratio and tone function, in addition to it not having much of its own sound, unlike the LAX which makes the sounds it makes and not much else as far as I can tell, made it immediately more fun and understandable for me. So far I haven't had it for more than an hour but first impressions are very good. Normal size, massive value.

At this price point I don't think you'll find a better compression pedal. I've tried more than a few over the years and this is better than the cheap ones and as good as the high end ones. It isn't entirely transparent unless you leave the tone control alone. It adds sparkle one way, a Jamerson thump the other. There is great flexibility across the controls and yet I found it very simple to dial in a nice, tight sound. Don't be fooled by the price - this is a great compressor.

Having plodded away with the Behringer BD! 21 for so long with satisfactory results, I thought I could maybe have more control with a different pedal, so I opted for the Scylla and boy, am I glad I did. The sound I can now achieve is more what’s in my head. By changing the parameters on the compression and tone controls I can create more sustain. The combinations possible makes this a pedal I wish I’d got some time ago.

This is a great, useful, versatile pedal. Did it last more than 2 months? No. It just stopped compressing. It turned on, lit up, signal flowed through, volumes could be increased or decreased but the compressor would not engage.

The pedal seems well constructed. For the money, it offers a surprising amount of control. There are large input and output knobs, plus smaller controls for ratio, attack, release and tone. Between all of these, there is plenty of scope to dial in the sound you’re looking for. A switch to turn the effect off completes the controls. There is a status light between the smaller controls and the foot switch along with an led border on the back/front of the pedal which can be set to off/on or in sync with the status light. Battery operation is not possible, nor is a power supply included, but most of these will probably end up on pedalboards along with a few other devices. I’m probably in the minority, but as someone who also mixes recordings, I’m firmly of the opinion that all bass guitar parts require at least a tiny amount of compression, just to even things out and tame the occasional excessive transient. Some would argue this is not necessary live, but that has not been my experience. I’m a somewhat heavy-handed player (a bad habit that I’m too old to correct), so this becomes even more critical for me than perhaps it would be for a more even player. Adjusting the controls, I found it fairly easy to dial in the sound I was after. Further experimenting revealed a large range of possibilities and everyone should be able to find settings that suit. I was quite surprised to find this range of controls on such a competitively priced pedal. Someone less familiar with compression techniques & parameters would probably need to do a bit of homework to get the best out of this pedal, however I would say that this effort would pay off. A very tweakable pedal that offers great value for money.

So subtle with all controls turned to noon ie halfway that I thought I’d bought the emperors new clothes! Two things are important to say, firstly different bass guitars will definitely sound different with this gizmo, I tried it eventually with extreme settings on a fender jazz bass and it gave me a slowed percussive sound but on another more expensive active pickup bass there was a very slight effect with the same settings. That may be why different people will experience different outcomes and need different settings. Secondly the release control is a slow release turned fully anti-clockwise, try turning output gain to say 9 o’clock but input gain to fully clockwise ( ie all the input signal gets compressed) then turn all lower knobs fully clockwise except release which should be set fully anti clockwise. By following these settings you should hear the maximum compression this unit is capable of, after that dial back any knob to reduce the effect. It took me quite a while to find out the above and as I said before, up to that time I thought the thing wasn’t doing anything at all much except lower my overall volume quite a bit, to compensate for that I turned up the output gain bearing in mind that any high gain adds more distortion to the signal. Overall I was pleased with the effect of this pedal and somewhat relieved to find it had one! I think overall compression on stage is a bit overrated, for a pub band for example it’s probably unnecessary ( you won’t hear an appreciable difference) and for large venues it’s best left to the mixer out front. However if you want something subtle which seems to clean up the signal from the bass quite nicely then this particular compressor is a reasonable buy at a reasonable price. As an aside it might help if other reviewers mention which bass guitar they’re trying it out on as effects seem to vary a bit.

Wenn man ein klein wenig unterstützung benötigt, damit sich das Spielen etwas gleichmäßiger anhört, ist das Teil schon richtig gut. Wer jetzt sehr dynamisch spielen will, kann sich das Teil sparen, aber bei einigen STücken ist es schon recht angenehm, dass der Klang/Lautstärke ein bisschen regelmäßiger ist. Benutze es für den E-Bass. Funktioniert prima, sieht sehr schick auf dem Pedal-Board aus und ist preislich auch sehr symphatisch, würde ich meinen.

Great compression at a low cost !!! Lots of control over tone and compression. Works great on guitar or bass. Well built and love the lights too !!! LOL Would recommend, especially if your on a budget !!! Even if your not on a budget, it's a really good compressor !!! 5 stars !!!!!

First off I want to say the pedal is awesome for the price point! It was pretty easy to dial in, I found some YouTube videos and online stuff to help me do it as well. BUT, I did run into an issue mid December (2025) where it wouldn’t power up properly and when it did it was pure distortion. I had it on a nice Guitto board and plugged into my Vodoo labs power. I reached out to Joyo directly and to not only did they respond within a couple of days , they helped me out in HUGE way! I mentioned I have a gig coming really soon and I was hoping we could resolve this quickly of course. They asked for a video with some instructions and where to send or share for them to review. So did that and uploaded it to them the day after, and within twenty four hours they got to me. To my pleasant surprise they (Specifically Zeng) said it was blurry and a little hard to make out in their end, but no worries they made arrangements with Amazon fulfillment and are sending one to me and will be there by Dec.30; it arrived two earlier than that and it works great! And when I asked them the next steps for the warranty issue they said I could keep the defective one and do whatever I would with it! I am aware of all the costs for shipping products like that back vs the cost of sending one and not worry about it, obviously. The fact that they did this for me in such a short manner and the level of customer service I got is lost these days and hard to find. They actually cared about my situation and took until regard that I am a customer who owns more than one of their products and have become a fan of their stuff, and they care bout that, is very uncommon these days.
