Among the few women artists who have transcended art history, none had a meteoric rise quite like Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907–1954). Her unmistakable face, depicted in over fifty extraordinary self-portraits, has been admired by generations; along with hundreds of photographs taken by notable artists such as Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray, and Martin Munkácsi, they made Frida Kahlo an iconic image of 20th century art. After an accident in her early youth, Frida became a painter of her own free will. Her marriage to Diego Rivera in 1929 placed her at the forefront of an artistic scene not only in the cultural Renaissance of Mexico, but also in the United States. Her work garnered praise from the poet André Breton, who added the Mexican painter to the ranks of international surrealism and exhibited her work in Paris in 1939 to the admiration of Picasso, Kandinsky, and Duchamp. We access the intimacy of Frida’s affections and passions through a selection of drawings, pages from her personal diary, and an extensive illustrated biography featuring photos of Frida, Diego, and the Casa Azul, Frida’s home and the center of her universe. This book allows readers to admire Frida Kahlo’s paintings like never before, including unprecedented detail shots and famous photographs. It presents pieces in private collections and reproduces works that were previously lost or have not been exhibited for more than 80 years. Excellent book on Kahlo.
Text and art and photo quality excellent . If you want to see Kahlo’s work, most or all of it seems to be here. Lots of photos too. I need to get into the text more not finished reading but the author has done the research. Book size is good. If it were a bit larger it might be better. BUT for the price it’s great! Thank goodness it isn’t the teeny Taschen size.

Frida Understood!
I study Frida- like no other artist. As I looked over the content and how this book was written, I believe this book is my favorite (biography) overall for these reasons: Frida Voice: It is through her painting that we find the best voice of who she was. Good Perspective: Taschen leads us through her entire life as an artist and a person. I believe his perspective and insights to be a more observational view- presenting different thoughts than other writings. The Paintings: I will say that I was not a fan of Frida's paintings but while reading this book became more enamored with her work. Photographs and Color Images: This book holds photographs I have never seen before. The book has beautiful black and white photographs as well as beautiful full-page images of her paintings. Finally- This book also covers not only her life, but also well as chapters of her diary, biography timeline, Diego, and the Casa Azul. Overall, I am enjoying reading this book. I feel that we get a deep look into who Frida was as a person and perhaps WHY she was the way she was. There are many references to painting styles that Frida was exposed to which at times you have to flip back and forth to different pages- but I found that I would need a break in reading to look at the images.

Damaged in shipping
I LOVE the book. However, the book was quite damaged as you can see on arrival. That was disappointing.
