Can I cut the knife guard to fit blade?

I wouldn't think, so as it is made of durable plastic sheath, that is lined, so to speak, with a very smooth type of coating, (like felt almost) to protect the blade of the knife, that and the snug fit. I am delighted with mine, only wish I had thought to purchase these years ago.

How do you clean? dishwasher or laundry machine hopefully

The knife guard sheaths have a felt liner, so cleaning in a machine might remove the liner. If the outside needs cleaning, then wash it by hand without submersing it - use a dish cloth or sponge to wipe clean, then dry with a towel. If someone put the guard on a dirty knife so that food got into the felt liner, you could try soaking the guard in warm water for a few minutes to soften the food, then running a knife blade through the guard from one end to the other. I suggest a regular dinner knife rather than a sharp knife. I would not use a dishwasher because you might soften the plastic and have the guard warp or even melt. Laundry machine? That seems like overkill. In the future, only put the guard on a clean knife.
