A story-driven survival horror experience set in a mysterious military facility. Face terrifying enemies, solve puzzles, and uncover dark secrets. Designed for fans of classic horror with modern visuals and gameplay. Review: - - Let's mix up Resident Evil with the Thing. And viola this game was born. Great story(but it starts very slow), great characters, great controls, sound and music WOW. Overall great game. To me 9/10. Review: A good game. - I did return this as I found it cheaper on the Playstation Store but have given 4 stars as the game itself is very good. Made me jump more than a few times. Will say that the graphics is a mixed bag as generally looks very good with some excellent environmental textures and effects but some textures on items look great while some others look low-res. Odd really as why would you have say an oil drum where the texture is hi-res but then a poster or food carton that is very low-res textures. Puzzling. Having fun playing though.

Better in some ways, less so in others...
Here's a quick sum up for anyone who doesn't want to read a longer review: Daymare 1994 is a 3rd person over-the-shoulder survival horror game in the style of the more recent Resident Evil games. It's a sequel to the PS4 game Daymare 1994, but it's a prequel so it's set years before the first game and you don't need to have played or completed that to play this one. If you didn't like the previous game, this one won't change your mind. It's upscaled graphically and the dialogue, voice acting and combat are tighter this time around, but still have their flaws. It's recommended to play the newer Resident Evil games first if you haven't. It's a solid game, with it's own style of combat thanks to the frost grip weapon, but has glitches and not much variation. To go more in depth, If you've played the previous game, this time you only play as 1 character. I liked her more than the 3 from the first game so I didn't mind, but the whole game has less variation this time. The environments reminded me of the first F.E.A.R. game in that they vary, but so slightly you won't really remember the differences between them afterwards. Whereas Daymare 1998 had the forest level, the Hospital level, the streets of Keen Sight, the funicular, etc that stuck in your mind, this new game plays like a much longer version of Daymare 1998's 5th chapter: an extended journey through the various environments of a facility. There's not much variation in the enemies either. The standard enemies are either blue-tinged or red. The blue can be killed normally, the red will need to be thoroughly frozen before finishing them off. Then there are sparkers. They seem to be the mini-bosses. They spawn normal enemies to attack you and it they touch you it's a one-shot cut-scene death which gets pretty annoying, especially since you can't sprint like you could in Daymare 1998. You can either walk or jog. The sparkers float as fast as you can jog, so if they get too close it's virtually impossible to get away from them. There's not many variations in enemy encounters either. It's mostly the generic enemies rushing at you from around a corner or the sparklers materialising out of thin air. The badic enemies only grapple you so you'll get grabbed, mash buttons to escape and then they rush you again. I'd like to have seen more variation in enemy types and tactics or at least more attacks. Also some more horror moments: one of the bodies on the ground grabbing you as you go past, an enemy falling out of a locker, a door behind you bursting open, etc would have been good. Despite what some of the other reviews say, I found the graphics very good. Delilah looks amazing, every detail of her is shown in stunning detail and the enemies and environments look good too. What is strange though is the various things that show up in low resolution and pixellated like they came from a Minecraft game. At first I thought it was textures not loading in, but I've stood next to them waiting and it hasn't happened. I could understand it if it was something down a dark corridor beyond a barricade you can't get past, but it's things like pipes or construction machinery that you walk past and can stand right next to, so the difference between them and your character is profound. It happens quite a lot it seems too. The sound, music and voice acting all seems fine, if mostly unremarkable, but it's not immersion-breaking like it was in the first game (ie. Raven sounding like he's delivering lines from a soap opera as soon as you meet him so it seems like you missed something or the woman making the distress call giving you so much extraneous information about the top secret lab she's working in while her life is in danger that it just sounds wrong). About the combat, it's tighter than before. The first game registered missed shots as hits and vice-versa quite a lot and this seems to have been corrected, though I did miss with more shotgun blasts in enclosed spaces than I would have thought possible. This game introduces the Frost Grip weapon though which allows your character to fire or spray liquid nitrogen in a variety of ways and makes the combat in this game the big difference between it and the previous one. It also makes it more it's own game which is good and it is used in some environmental puzzles (dousing fires, etc). Even with the upgrades it runs out fast though. The game doesn't give you many canisters to refill it and it refills on it's own so slowly too and you are attacked by groups of enemies at a time, some of which HAVE to be frozen to destroy. I have ended up just running around, waiting for it to refill enough so I can kill an enemy that keeps resurrecting. About the glitches: they are still there, it doesn't seem as bad as the first game (that boss Battle on Chapter 5 was so bad!), but I did have the game freeze for 3 minutes yesterday (fittingly while I was using the freeze ray on a couple of enemies. Good thing I hadn't upgraded it or it might have been longer haha). The screen froze, it responded to no buttons and a beeping alarm in the background just kept sounding on a loop. My console worked fine though. I was able to look through, play and delete my recent trophy videos. I was hoping it would close so i could report the error, but it never did. Finally I went to the console home screen, then back into the game and pressed the X button and the game unfrozen and carried on as if nothing had happened. There have been no updates since that happened and like I said, it wouldn't report it as an error, so this is not fixed. The game is also not as responsive as you would hope. I got locked in a loop of being grappled over and over again by the same enemy because I pressed the left d-pad button to select the shotgun when it was already the active gun. This puts it away, so I got caught in a grapple and had to fight the enemy away. I pressed left again and it didn't register before I was grappled. And repeat. It's a small thing and I had about 8 medikits, but it still felt silly. So the combat and gameplay isn't perfect, but it feels like a step in the right direction. I'd like to see a new game in the franchise marry the further improved gameplay of this game with a more varied game setting and story like the first. And please, playtest the hell out of it before it releases! Some technical information: The disk version seems to be version 2.000.000 and as of 3/1/24, the latest version is 2.004.000, so there's a 7GB update patch to install. Interestingly the game is 20.68GB before the update, but the game file is 2GB less after it installs, so I don't think it's extra content being added, but bug fixes and optimisations. The game is playable offline, but I couldn't say how it handles without those fixes so if you're an offline player, just be informed. In conclusion, I'm going to go with 3 out of 5 for this one because I feel like less would be spiteful towards a game I want to like and is a small step in the right direction in some ways, but to give it more would be ignoring the glitches and shortcomings of it. If the glitches were removed, I think it would be a 4 star game, (the game has too little variation in all aspects to be a 5 star game), but Daymare 1998 is still glitched to hell (and the developers' response to criticisms was to say they'd do better next time rather than fix them), so I'll leave it at 3 stars for now.
