This first volume in The Flight Manuals Series is a ground school textbook, maneuvers manual, and syllabus all rolled into one, providing a step-by-step comprehensive course for student pilots working towards a Private or Sport Pilot certificate. This authoritative manual from the legendary flight instructor, William K. Kershner, edited by William C. Kershner, presents a wealth of practical information while encouraging student pilot decision making. The fundamentals of flying are clearly described in a methodical yet informal manner that a student can easily absorb. This manual includes detailed references to maneuvers and procedures, and is fully illustrated with the author’s own drawings. It's a must-have for all student pilots and flight instructors, providing a single reference for both flight and ground school. This manual covers all you need to know for your first flight, presolo, the post-solo maneuvers, cross-country and night flying. First published in 1960 and updated continuously since then, this Eleventh Edition ensures you will be prepared for the classroom, tarmac, and the cockpit. The Student Pilot’s Flight Manual is a gathering of material used in preflight and postflight briefings and in-flight instruction provided by one of the greatest flight instructors of our time. It also includes a synopsis of what to expect for your FAA Knowledge Exam and checkride. But this book is not intended to merely help readers “get past” the exam and checkride―it also has the essential information for use in the day-to-day process of flying airplanes.

Beats the Jeppesen and FAA's Airplane Flying Handbooks.
Finally, I have found a book that is truly written for the student pilot. And I mean, for someone who doesn't have a degree in rocket science. Everything is explained in simple, easy to understand concepts. The one thing I don't like in this book is the explanation of the force called "lift". As with many other flight manuals, including the FAA's, this book states that lift can be explained by the Bernoulli's Theorem, which is totally wrong. I can easily explain (with facts and demonstrations) why Bernoulli's Theorem does NOT explain how lift is created, and in fact, it creates more confusion to a student than an explanation. (Also gives the student the wrong information in the process.)However, the debate over Bernoulli's Theorem is not the scope of this review. Despite that incorrect (IMO) explanation on lift, the book is worth having for every student pilot who is motivated to become the safest and most skilled pilot (s)he can be. I recommend it to every one of my students!

Good book for Research
Admittedly, I’m not a pilot. I just wanted a good reference book for the novel I’m writing with a pilot main character. This manual covers the absolute basics (which I needed) as well as the more complicated stuff. I feel I’ll be able to write more competently now!

Readable Format and Quite Complete
This manual requires the student to focus carefully on each bit of material as he/she progresses through the book. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the steps taken with a flight instructor and not to be used as stand-alone training in and of itself. Reading the relevant material prior to each dual instruction session is very helpful in progressing toward the private pilot rating. Highly recommended.

Good Read
Actually teaching someone who knew very little about aviation. I like the charts, humor, and 1 on 1 side notes throughout the book. Nice how everything is broken down.

Excellent Study Guide
This Kershner Manual has long been considered one of the best study guides for private pilot training. It is packed with useful information, presented in an easy to understand fashion. I would recommend this book to anyone beginning their flight training, or to any pilot who is looking for a skill "refresher".Kershner puts alot of emphasis on the physics involved in all of the maneuvers and flight characteristics discussed in this manual. His style of writing, while filled with technical information, is still quite fun to read. The only thing I would gripe about, and it is quite minor, is that some of the illustrations in the book are a bit outdated.

Easygoing but fulfilling.
I find the book to have a playful tone, which takes some of the stress out of the first time you try to use what you have read. I read through the sections for pre-solo flying before I stepped into my introductory ride and received commendation for the amount of knowledge I had retained and for how well I seemed to have applied the book knowledge to the actual controls in a PA-28. My instructor had heard of the book and commended it when I showed him what I was reading.

Great sized book for such a small price.
Book came in excellent condition I honestly thought it would be smaller not as in thickness but as in textbook, but I reckon that makes it feel like your getting through the book faster than you actually are.
