This is why Argerich is so highly rated. To sample her approach, try listening to her reading of the opening Prelude (in C major) and compare it to, say, Pollini's. Pollini's is a fine, deeply thought-out account. Argerich's, by contrast, is an immersion in the emotion of the piece. In works by other composers, some people might find her passionate approach off-putting - Argerich is often criticised for playing 'too fast' and with 'too much' emotion . But here, it's perfect, (and actually, I suspect, a little slower than her live performances of the same pieces). It's passionate of course, but technically accomplished and completely convincing. This disc contains performances from Argerich at her most volatile and inspirational. The Preludes and the Sonata both date from the 1970s and offer very good sound which will be no cause for concern. The performances themselves are from a time when Argerich was still a young woman and they give no quarter in terms of being emotionally super-charged. In the hands of lesser pianists some may describe these types of interpretations as impetuous but that suggests a lack of previous thought. In this case these performances, which are certainly emotionally driven and at white heat, betray no such casualness. Instead the impression gained is that of intense emotionalism intensely controlled.The Preludes are delivered as if one sustained piece with very little pause between one and the next. Chopin wrote them all as a complete unit which was unusual for him. Most of his collected works as bought today (sets of Scherzi, Nocturnes, Impromptus, Mazurkas etc.) were written individually throughout his life and were never intended to be played as complete sets. The Preludes were different though and that is very much how Argerich plays them - as a stream of continuous inspiration.In general terms there is an emphasis on forwardly moving tempi, some considerably faster than normal. This is most true when a faster piece follows on without any pause from the previous piece so that they become emotionally joined. This seems perfectly acceptable when so many of these preludes are so fragmentary and benefit by being so joined.The Sonata also receives a blistering performance with all the same sense of forwardly driven emotions and with tempi to match. Dynamics and phrasing are utilised to maximise the emotional content of the music. There are few more emotionally driven performances on disc and this could have the effect of making other fine performances seem rather cool and reserved.This is a thrilling disc with a strong sense of improvisatory drive and displaying highly charged emotional responses. There are equally valid ways of playing this repertoire but none more convincing than this in its own way. This is great pianism allied to great music making seemingly done on the spur of the moment. Definitely not Chopin playing for the faint hearted!I would suggest that this disc should be seriously considered as a 'must buy' for all collectors interested in alternative interpretations. Purchasers interested in an 'only' buy may wish to tread more carefully if they are after a representative disc of the program. This one may make all the others seem unjustifiably dull!

There are many good recordings of Chopin's preludes. Lots of them are made by outstanding pianists, of whom Martha Argerich is one. The music itself is more open to interpretation than most other classical music, it opens itself up naturally to the whims of the player, and seems somehow to benefit from different readings. No two recordings sound alike and this is one thing I love about them- you can own any amount of different recordings and they will all show a different insight into Chopin's musical personality.That said, the absolutely fiery rage of, say, number 12, the scintillating number 10, the impeccably dreamy number 13, the deep bell-like bass on number 9 all mark Argerich out as two things. 1- an incredible player with an amazing technique, and 2- one of very few pianists to really play an individual, highly innovative set. There really is not a dull moment in this incredible recording. Recommended highly!

One of my favourite classical recordings is that of Pogorelich's account of Chopin's piano sonata no.2 in B flat minor (op.35).I also very much admire Argerich and so I decided to buy this cd so as to compare the two performances.Those of you who have the inclination to compare and enjoy the recordings/performances based on their own merits will certainly appreciate this delightful cd.Argerich's account is pure and beautiful. Pogorelich's version is very different but lovely too.There is no doubt in my mind that this cd is one of the most enjoyable from the solo piano section of my collection and I hope this review encourages you to purchase.A very important disc indeed with Argerich offering a very commanding performance.ENJOY!

Man braucht ueber Martha Argerichs pianistisches Koennen kein Wort mehr zu verlieren. Ich habe Chopins Preluede & b-moll Sonate von ihr bereits als Vinyl Scheibe besessen, und bin froh, dass ich sie jetzt wieder hoeren kann. Argerisch ist extrem gradlinig, aber nie langweilig: lyrisch gesanghaft wenn die Komposition es erfordert, forsch und uebermuetig an den passenden Stellen. Sie trifft den richtigen Ton mit traumwandlerischer Sicherheit.

Neben seinen Nocturnes zählen die 24 plus zwei Préludes aus den opp. 28, 45 und posth. von Frédéric Chopin zu seinen beliebtesten Werken und zu den populärsten der klassischen Musik. Das nimmt nicht Wunder, schließlich beinhalten die Stücke einige der schönsten Melodien des polnischen Tonsetzers.Martha Argerich darf gewiss als eine der bedeutendsten Interpreten von Chopins Klaviermusik gelten. Auch wenn die gebürtige Argentinierin mittlerweile beinahe ausschließlich Kammermusik (ein)spielt, so hat sie doch mit dieser Einspielung aus den Jahren 1975 und 1977 - hervorragende Aufnahmequalität - bewiesen, mit welchem Gespür sie ihren ganz individuellen Zugang zu Chopin findet.Chopin reiht seine Préludes in Zweiergruppen ohne größeren Zusammenhang aneinander, immer abwechselnd in Dur und Moll. Der Ausdrucksgehalt dieser Musik wechselt von leger, nach tiefsinnig, von aufbrausend nach innig, von oberflächlich nach intim.Argerich lebt die Préludes am Klavier. Mit ihrem charakteristischen Anschlag, der voller Lyrik und Wärme steckt, es aber dennoch versteht, an den entscheidenden Stellen zuzupacken, macht sie die Stücke zu ihren eigenen. Ihr Spiel ist abwechslungsreich, farbig und differenziert, stets ausgewogen und kontrastreich. Ihre ordnende Herangehensweise setzt haargenaue und individuelle Akzente. In der Regel wählt sie zwingende, gehende Tempi. Niemals wirkt ihr Spiel akademisch oder verklärt, sie ist immer präsent, zaubert uns Chopins Klangwelten direkt ins Wohnzimmer. Dadurch ist Gänsehaut garantiert.Selten beispielsweise habe ich die Préludes Nr. 2 a moll oder Nr. 4 e moll intensiver und tiefer empfunden erlebt. Man höre sich nur die Nummer 20 in c moll an, wenn Argerichs Spiel selbst in den leisesten Passagen noch hell, transparent und glasklar ist! Und dann wieder ihre Deutung der berühmten "Regentropfen Prélude" in Des Dur, die strahlend und beinahe majestätisch wirkt. Zwischen dieser und der gleich darauf folgenden b moll Prélude schafft sie den größtmöglichen Kontrast, wenn sie wie entfesselt in die Tasten haut. Auch ist sie meines Wissens die einzige, die das As Dur Prélude Nr. 17 wirklich "Allegretto" spielt und damit beweist, dass es nur so seinen wahren Gehalt offenbart.Als Zugabe gibt's eine der größten Klaviersonaten der Romantik, die gleichberechtigt neben so großen Werken wie den letzten drei Schubert Sonaten, der dritten brahmsschen Sonate oder der h moll Sonate von Liszt steht: Chopins zweite Sonate in b moll op. 35. Vor allem der berührende Trauermarsch aus diesem Stück ist es, der unvergessen bleibt und sich gleich nach dem ersten Hören ins Gedächtnis des Rezipienten einprägt.Auch hier ist Argerich unantastbar, höchstens von Arthur Rubinsteins monumentaler Deutung noch übertroffen. Welche Tiefe im Ausdruck, welche Leidenschaft in den helleren Momenten, welche Grandezza und Spielfreude! Die Argerich setzt sich mit dieser Einspielung ein Denkmal für die Ewigkeit.

Interpretaciones perfectas, tanto técnica, como emocionalmente hablando. Virtuosismo, elegancia y romanticismo sin fisuras.Después de oír a tantos pianistas actuales de técnica prodigiosa pero que no transmiten nada, puede afirmarse que Chopin vive, en este disco.

Les "Préludes" demeurent sans doute l'oeuvre la plus fascinante de Chopin, un véritable concentré de son génie musical, qui, par là, atteint l'universel et l'intemporel.Ces pièces courtes, voire très brèves (parfois moins d'une minute), vous plongent dans un univers aux multiples dimensions sonores et émotionnelles, par un minimalisme formel d'une densité expressive impressionnante. Que ce soient ces bourrasques apocalyptiques qui emportent tout sur leur passage, ou ces moments de paix inespérés, comme une mer immobile et lumineuse sous un ciel de plomb, il est impossible de rester de marbre à l'écoute de cette musique qui vous emporte au-delà de toute banale réalité.Ces "Préludes" paradoxaux, se suffisant à eux-mêmes, n'introduisent à rien d'autre qu'à l'infini de leurs vertiges, sur l'invisible corde raide du piano...Martha Argerich explore comme personne tous ces mondes depuis leurs moindres recoins jusqu'à leurs horizons les plus abyssaux. Par sa virtuosité échevelée qui n'a d'égale que la délicatesse de son toucher et sa poésie sonore, elle sait réfréner sa fougue juste au bon moment, toujours sur le fil du rasoir, en une tension jamais relâchée, jusqu'aux derniers accords du 24ème prélude, qui font s'ouvrir le sol sous vos pieds...La deuxième sonate ne traîne pas sous les doigts de la pianiste qui évite tout pathos en allant droit au coeur de la substance musicale, qu'elle sculpte avec une force incisive et incendiaire. La célèbre "Marche funèbre" ne prend pas le temps de s'alanguir : l'expression est simple, sans détour, et l'essentiel est dit. Quand au final, étonnamment bref, il fait admirablement écho aux "Préludes" par sa densité tellurique.Plus qu'un disque, une porte ouverte que l'on ne veut plus refermer...

Argerichs Einspielung unterscheidet sich in vielerlei Hinsicht zu der von Rubinstein. Sie zeigt die Stücke aus leicht geändertem Blickwinkel, sehr angenehme Abwechslung. Wem die Preludes gefallen, kann ich nur empfehlen auch Argerichs Interpretation zu kaufen. Auch die Sonate spielt sie orginell anders als Rubinstein, wobei seine Version "heftiger" klingt, da er ein höheres Tempo vorgibt und sein Rubato nur angedeutet ist (vergleichsweise).
