From Birth to Five Years, based on the pioneering work of Mary Sheridan, is widely regarded as the go-to reference for health, education and social care professionals, or anyone concerned with the developmental progress of pre-school children. In this new fourth edition, the text has been developed to further align it with current child development philosophies and practices, and to support the wider group of professionals that are now required to take steps for promoting childrenโs development as part of their assessment and management plans. This book aims to improve the clinical management of children with developmental disorders, through providing the full range of developmental attainments, methods of observation, and advice about when to seek help. Features of this completely revised edition include: For students and tutors โ information on theoretical aspects of development, with further reading suggestions and references including the most recent international studies in the field A new section on the development of attention and self-regulation Contemporary case studies with guidance on when to raise concerns for students and teachers Discussion points to stimulate class debate To complement this book, a new companion volume, From Birth to Five Years: Practical Developmental Examination , offers a step-by-step โhow toโ guide, including guidance on enquiry and observation, how to chart typical and atypical patterns, and โred flagsโ for recognising significant delay or abnormality. To consolidate and expand on the practical and theoretical information across both books, a new companion website is available at www.routledge.com/cw/sharma , which includes the following additional learning material: An interactive timeline of the key developmental domains Introductions to theory with links to further reading Research summaries Video clips demonstrating practical assessment skills Review: The easy to read guide: A great book for understanding the different stages in you child's development - This is THE missing instruction manual when having a child. Along with the web companion, this is a great book for understanding the different stages in you child's development. It is written in an easy to understand language with clear illustrations and graphs. It does a good job in explaining the wide definition of "normal" in child development, and that different childs will have different rates and order for the steps. The book also made us better at talking to our child care spesialist. It is also good to know "what's next", and how to interact with your child for the next steps. We have given copies of this books as gift to other friends, as this is by far the best book I've read. Review: Good layout and helpful. - I recently got a job working with under fives and bought this book to refresh myself on cold development of under fives. I like that the first part of the book is stating key development points then the second half of the book is more in depth. So I can use the first half as a quick point of reference and the second half to learn more in depth about child development for under fives.

Aimed at childcare professionals
I bought this as a new mother and didn't realise to what extent it's aimed at professionals. That said, although it doesn't offer much detail on each developmental stage for a nonprofessional it does come across as extremely authoritative and accurate.

Children's Developmental Progress
This book was bought to replace a copy of Mary Sheridan's book I bought about forty years ago and have subsequently lost. Her work is in my opinion the ultimate on child development.

Great quick reference of milestones and early development for students and health professionals
I chose this because I have been using earlier versions of this for teaching health care professionals, especially young medical students for years. It is a great reference for students when they are first learning about development. It gives them a good idea of the behaviours to look for at each milestone/age and more recent versions have expanded on sensory and the importance of social and emotional development during early childhood.
