Does this need to be attached to the ceiling to work best or can you place on a table or the floor?

It can be placed anywhere. I have mine mounted on a light stand. It angles up or down.if you want light effects on the floor then it should to be mounted on ceiling or wall.

How many colors is included this stage light?

This stage light combines dozens of patterns such as red pattern, green pattern, blue pattern, red blueprint case, green blueprint case and more than 200 mixed effects of LED colorful effects.

Can this be used continuously without music? i want to use as a night light , ie not sound activated. is there a suitable mode for this?

It has multiple settings for solid colors or a mixture. There is also a white little cover that you can put on it to make it one solid light… A little bit softer. To my knowledge it hasn’t been music activated. Just kind of a slow flash. It works great as a night light or even could be stuck in a Christmas tree
