Price is right, performance is great
I purchased this product for measuring the engine temps of nitro RC cars. when tuning an RC car - the head temp is an important way to determine if you're running it lean or rich. this IR thermometer is perfect for doing this.. its small, and accurate (when used next to a much larger/more expensive laser unit - it measures withing a few tenths of a degree each time) and the readings are pretty fast. I haven't tested out its waterproof abilities yet, but it feels solid, and has o rings in all the appropriate spots - so i don't doubt them. One neat feature which i'm not sure was documented - if you press and hold the button, you get continuous readings... useful for scanning over a larger area to look for hot spots, or just to ensure a more accurate picture of whats going on with whatever you're measuring. the only thing i wish it had was a backlight - but i'm not deducting a star from it, because it never claimed to have one. All told - i'm very satisfied with this purchase, and have already recommended it to friends in the RC hobby. The price was great, and the performance is a lot better than i expected for the price.

Very Nice, But Not "Washer-Waterproof"
I purchased this device mainly for the interest at finding out various temperatures around me and the readings all seemed to be accurate. It's a very small device that gives out fast readings, so it is nice to be able to take this on-the-go easily. Unfortunately, being this small it is also prone to accidentally being left in a pocket and going through the wash. It said it was water proof, which I hoped that it was, however after finding it after it had been washed I am stuck with an "Er 3" on the screen and erratic readouts. I'm sure a brief submission into water wouldn't hurt it, but "waterproof" does not mean "can go through the wash." With that said I will be purchasing another as really it was only my own fault that it went through the wash.

Great for the money
The good: <$20 with shipping. Accuracy not bad approximately ยฑ5ยฐF. Small and light. Water proof IP67 (look it up on the Web; 6 is dust proof and 7 is water proof to 1M). Push button to measure, taking finger off of button is hold. Auto shutoff. Maxell Watch Battery Button Cell LR44 AG13 A76 Pack of 10 Batteries @$2.70 or 10Ct. 357 LR44 AG13 SR44W Alkaline Batteries @$6.39, readily available and cheap so long as you don't buy from a watch store. The bad: Small size and black color make it very easy to loose. No laser designator so you need to be fairly close to make sure that you are checking what you think that you are. Acceptance angle not specified. Accuracy good for the money but not adequate for quite a few applications. Display can be hard to read as it is not back light. The Ugly: Accuracy varies with the temperature range. Not horrid but could be a surprise if you are counting on the accuracy to be exactly as expected. Overall a great buy and for lots of applications all that is needed.

Very helpful and affordable
I have a cat who needs SubQ fluids every other day and I needed a way to tell if her fluids were warmed to the proper temperature. Because I use a 1000 ml IV bag, the fluid level is different every time I heat the bag, with shorter and shorter warm up times. I just couldn't get it consistent, until I found this very helpful device. It allows me to determine the temperature of the bag of fluids without compromising it's sterility. I'm also able to determine the temperature of the pool without having to stick my big toe in, which is a big bonus when it's been cool in the evening! When checked against melting ice, the thermometer was accurate to within .5 degree! I'm convinced I will find other uses for this handy pocket-sized device. I would definitely recommend this tool for measuring anything from baby bottles to window sashes! And it's affordable too!

Kind of expected just one bit more..
The temperature accuracy for certain is fine, tested with my old one. But using this daily in HVAC work will be tricky as the laser is invisible. *****On the plus side, the compact size of it is great (it's about 5-6 inches long and slightly thicker than a women's lip stick.) As well its great how quick it reads the surface you point at. Upon startup it takes 1... maybe 1.3 seconds to measure but from there your next click while on is even quicker since it's already on. This little thing shuts itself off between 16-17 seconds after the intial "measure button" is pressed. - No annoying off/on switch to worry of in your pocket, not to mention, no sounds/beeps which can be annoying as well. ---------- For what it's worth to me however, its a reliable back-up in HVAC work yet indispensable to the same industry as well. If you want to know โขwhereโข you're reading, you have to either have a good steady hand or move close to your target such as your air vents for example. (Holding the button while moving the pointer til you get what you expected is one way to do it) For the size of this it can make anyone ready to work on Air Balancing or simply check standard ventilation snappy if you are moving around relatively close to your target (as well you should be anyway) It's pocket sized, but still quite a handy tool I'm not getting rid of from my jobs! :)

Small but handy addition to your toolkit
I ordered this thermometer from Amazon about 2 weeks ago. It arrived with a little delay (about 1 wk), and I began using it straight away. It's simple to use right out of the package. It includes the batteries and also a useful wriststrap. The unit looks to be very well constructed with a shock-resistant housing coupled with water-tight o-rings around the moving parts. It's very simple to use. Just point it at the surface you want to know the temperature of and press the triggering button. Instantly reads the temp in either C or F. I haven't checked it against a standardized source, but it did give very uniform agreement on a variety of surfaces and liquids. Overall, a very handy tool with a very compact size. A useful item in any kitchen or toolbox. The only cons appear to be the lack of an aiming beam and no backlit display, but I knew that beforehand so it's no surprise. At this price, I can't complain.

Good value, good price - BUT falls apart after awhile
This was the first infrared thermometer that I've ever bought. It works great. Its wonderful to have a device that allows me to see how cold the "cold spots" in my house are to see if they are a problem. It is also nice to double check my oven and make sure that it is getting as hot as it should be. My husband and I love it. I'm really glad that it shuts itself off after 10 seconds or so. We have a bad tendency to forget to shut off our digital thermometer... so its great that this one turns itself off after a few seconds and keeps the batteries lasting longer. My only "complaint" is that its a little difficult to push the button to turn it on and off. Sometimes the button seems to get stuck too, but its nothing major in my opinion considering the price. Other than that, its a great bargain! EDIT: 11/10/11 I down graded it from 4 to 2 stars. The product isn't as great as it was when I first bought it. It first was fine, but a month or two afterwards... not so much. It drains the batteries quickly, the screen flickers and sometimes won't even come on. The cap when replacing the batteries doesn't want to stay on. It still does technically work, so its not getting a 1 star. I retract my previous happy 4-star statement and want to warn you that its really a 2-star. Perhaps mine was flawed, maybe mine had problems and it was a fluke... I don't know. Perhaps I expected more for $20. I ended up getting a slightly more expensive trigger-thermometer. I trust more in my new trigger-thermometer's accuracy. This one still seems accurate, that is - if you can read the flickering screen. Buy a different product for the long haul - it'll save you money and grief.

Very Accurate Used to measure temp on Sub-Q fluids and for Aquarium water Changes
Cats can live varying amounts of time with kidney problems some for years, some for months. One thing that is sometimes needed when your cat has kidney disease are IV fluids you give Sub-Q. They are cold and it can make the cat uncomfortably cold if you don't warm them. However, you don't want them to be too warm. I used this make sure the fluids were the right temperature. It works well for this purpose and I'd reccomend it if you are in the situation where you want to be sure your cat is comfortable while getting Sub-Q fluids. Update: I still use this for the cats. However, I have aquariums with tropical fish now. To keep your fish comfortable and to avoid shock you want the water currently in the aquarium to be the same as the water you are putting in. So before I empty the aquarium I check the temperature through the glass and when I fill it back up again I check the temperature again. I often have to let the water cool for a little while before putting it in so this is very useful so I know it's ready.
