Can it be used without a box spring

YES. Our bed is one huge heavy mattress on a board cover with material. This was the how it was purchased. Not like the old box springs. It helps me tuck the sheets because I can. Not lift my mattress high enough to cover the corner. Good luck.

Will this work on a mattress with a lip that holds the matress in?

You wouldn't be able to tuck the sheet under the mattress. You would only be tucking it down beside the lip.

Can it be used for tucking in fitted sheets?

Yes, that is the primary reason I purchased it. I have a back problem and it hurt to life the mattress to tuck the fitted sheet in. Now, I just use the Lift and Tuck right above the elastic and push in. You can use and when remaking the bed and not changing the sheets. I love this, it is great.
