These special stones have been sacred in Hindu culture for thousands of years, and are traditionally used in temples and personal altars. Certain families are allowed to harvest the stones from the river once a year while the river is low, and the stones may be more easily collected. These stones are a crypto-crystalline form of quartz, and vibrate as such. They get their colorful patterns and designs from the presence of iron oxides.
