What have you found to be the difference between this and a cheap version? Any noticeable difference?

I don't bother with the cheap ones, they either don't do anything or are too rough leaving you with red sore face. This product feels like it's very gentle and very effective when you use it without water, removing blemishes and leaving the skin nice and smooth. I do love it. And although it's quite expensive, you only need a pea size amount every few days so it will last for ages.
