Based on the novel by Philipp Meyer, this sweeping AMC drama series jumps between the years 1849/1850 and 1915 to tell the story of hardscrabble Texan Eli McCullough. Living among the Comanche as a young man, Eli goes on to become a wealthy and powerful cattle baron and burgeoning oil tycoon. Pierce Brosnan and Jacob Lofland portray the older and younger versions of Eli. Debuting in 2017, the show also stars Henry Garrett, Zahn McClarnon, Jess Weixler. Review: Another Compelling AMC Series - I saw this show when it originally aired, which inspired my recent purchase of the first season DVD set. As with other AMC series, most of the characters live in at least a morally grey area, which is a more realistic portrayal, and makes it so interesting. The package itself was delivered quickly and undamaged. Review: Great series - This is a good series, except it really isn't a series because only the first season is available. Had to order the book to see how it ends. Refreshing to watch this show with out the "F" word in every sentence. The only thing is I couldn't quite transition the actor playing him as young into the older version of him. Features not even close to matching. But still was a good evenings show. Probably watch it again soon. You miss stuff the first time.

Such an underrated series!
Such an underrated series and story. Absolutely loved it! Ashame AMC limited it to two seasons! Great acting as well! Wish we could purchase season two on DVD.

Awesome!
This was just an excellent series! Very violent. Did not go into detail about the insurrection in Texas around 1915 (Hispanics inspired by the Mexican revolution.) Period detail was excellent. Really liked hoe Pierce got into the scalping. It brought my readings on the subject of the Wars for Western Unification into a concrete context. Fairly complex. A few admirable characters. Better tan about 90 percent of what Amazon publishes!!!

Very Good But Don't Bother
This was a good production and well worth viewing, but AMC obviously has no intention of releasing the second (concluding) season, so don't leave yourself hanging.

Great movie/serries.
Had saw this series advertised in my husbands magazine and missed it on tv. Ordered the 4 disk set of the entire series and was thrilled with it. Great story about growing up with Indians and becoming a large rancher in the early 1900s. Now waiting for the next installment to come out.

What Drives The Texas Oil Baron?
The 1st season of the adaptation of the novel is most impressive. It avoids the cliches of most westerns. The Comanches are portrayed as complex human beings, not simplistically as ignorant savages. It jumps back and forth between 1839 when Eli McCulloch was captured by Indians as a young teenager and 1917 when a much older cattle baron Eli dreams of becoming an oil magnate. His teen experiences on the plains are used to show why the older Eli is such a harsh and unforgiving person. Meyer's work as a novelist has been compared to the writings of Frank Norris and John Dos Pasos, and very deservedly. It illustrates the selfish cold heartedness of all empire builders, but does not celebrate them.

One of the best Western Series
Really enjoyed this Western series! Loved the flashbacks to the Indian days of the mid-1800's then moving up to 1915 showing the History of the family.

A great series!
I really enjoyed this series and am looking forward to Season 2 when it's released. Too bad, however, that it has now been cancelled and there won't be a third. I did order the book that the series is based upon and am looking forward to a good long read to find out more.

Early Texans
Love the book and the series. Will buy the second season when it is available. Pierce Brosnan is fantastic as the Coronel. Just wish there was more of the story - they cut it more than they should have.

A Real Surprise
Maybe my expectations were set low enough to be pleasantly surprised. This is a quality show. Solid acting and a fascinating story line that follows the demise of the Commanche and the rise of Oil barons. The back and forth between the time periods flows beautifully. Pierce Bronson is excellent.
