The 5703 designation is for the triple (left hand, the right is ten speed on all 105 5700 shifters). The ten speed triple at $161.98 from the pull down box is a triple left hand shifter (front derailleur shifter)

I have and old trek bike. has a 3 x 9 gear shamino 105 system. will this work on the front derailure as is or do i have to buy an entire new system?

It should, as the number of detents that matters is the 3, not the 9. If you were replacing the right-hand lever you need the 9-rated one.
