It's also a terrific resource for parents trying to support and connect with their teens, and a wonderful adjunct for therapists looking for effective clinical tools. Great worksheets, a little light on new information/

Excellent Book for Graduate Students/Clinicians new to CBT
As a graduate student in a clinical psychology doctoral program, I have found this book extremely helpful not only in my work with clients, but also as a clinician in training. This book provides solid coverage of the cognitive distortions that contribute to negative thinking patterns, as well as a step by step action plan for how to switch these thinking patterns. The examples provided in each chapter have been very relatable to the clients I've used this book with (including adult clients!), but it also includes room for the client to self-reflect and come up with their own examples. I would definitely recommend this book to any clinician interested in learning more about CBT and how to actually implement the skills into sessions. I'd also recommend this book to any adolescent or adult as a self-help book.

Kid and teen friendly and useful workbook to help address negative thinking
As a clinical psychologist working in childhood anxiety and OCD, I am always on the look out for good workbooks. Many times kids and teens dismiss workbooks that are available because the examples do not reflect their experience or their complexity. In Dr. Alvord's books and workshops, you can tell she is someone who talks with kids, likes kids, and works with kids. So she knows how they think when in distress and how to help them find their way out. Dr. Alvord and her co-author Ann McGrath add a book that is really needed. Many kids or teens have negative thinking that is a source of their difficultlies either with no diagnosis or in the context of anxiety and depression. By offering separate sections on the different thinking traps kids, teens, parents or therapiist can focus their work with practical suggestions. A really helpful and useful resource

Excellent Resource for Teens
As a psychologist in practice for over ten years who specializes in treating teens with anxiety disorders and depression, I know first hand how difficult it is to find resources that are both accurate and readable. This book is great. The authors have done an excellent job of outlining and teaching the tools to help teens understand the thinking traps that they can get caught up in, which can impact mood and anxiety. We know that how we think impacts how we feel, and by changing our thinking to be more positive we can feel less stressed and happier - this book really helps guide teens on how to do this. Highly recommend for teens and parents of teens to read.

Well thought out, accessible resource for teens
What makes this book great, in my opinion, is the structure of it. The authors divide up negative thinking into nine types. This enables teens to focus on just the one chapter(s) that applies best to them. Each chapter has helpful tidbits and, importantly, exercises for readers to do. And the writing/editing was very smart in its approach -- the authors make great use of bullet points and charts and generally a very accessible style. A very smart approach -- highly recommended!

For anyone with a teen who is struggling and either is resistant to going to therapy or needs something in addition to therapy to work on at home, this is for you. Itโs an accessible, relatable Introduction to cognitive behavioural therapy for teens. What I like most is that the writer did not underestimate the readers. Intelligent wording is used, there is no condescending tone or patronizing language. The examples have been amended to be more relevant to teens,, and some of the psychological lingo has been put into more plain language, but it is still an accurate and helpful CBT workbook.
