Product Description Lasse, an elderly and widowed farmer, and his young son Pelle, join a boat-load of immigrants to escape from impoverished rural Sweden to Denmark's Baltic island of Bornholm. They are employed at a large farm in Denmark, where they are treated as the lowest of the low. It is ultimately their loving relationship which sustains them through a difficult year. Review WINNER - Best Foreign Language Film - Academy Awards NOMINATED - Best Actor in a Leading Role - Academy Awards WINNER - Palme d'Or - Cannes Film Festival WINNER - Best Foreign Language Film - Golden Globes WINNER - Best Actor - European Film Awards WINNER - Best Young Actor - European Film Awards ---In Bille August's Pelle the Conqueror, Max von Sydow is so astoundingly evocative that he makes your bones ache. --Hal Hinson, The Washington PostThe von Sydow performance is in a category by itself. It is another highlight in an already extraordinary career, and quite unlike anything that American audiences have seen him do to date. - Vincent Canby, The New York Times [T]he film is a towering achievement, grueling in its portrayal of a harsh existence yet ultimately an exhilarating experience unlikely to be forgotten. --Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times Review: A movie for all children and adults - This is a truly great movie. It demonstrates human emotions on a grand scale. It takes place around the turn of the century. A father (played by Von Sydow) and his son Pelle (played by Pelle Hvenegaard) are forced to travel from Sweden to Denmark in order to leave a life of poverty and despair (Pelle's mother died). Pelle is only 12, and his father is over 50. Only reluctantly does a farmer hire them (the father is too old, and the kid is too young). Little did they know that the life in Denmark was physically harsh and emotionally draining. Prejudice was common against the foreigners. Pelle is very dependent upon his emotionally weak father who will not defend his son and likes alcohol. In the end, Pelle demonstates his strength beyond most adult men. This movie is directed and produced so clearly and accurately that it draws you into the the harsh, physically filthy and emotionally draining life on the farm. Since it is filmed over the course of about one year, you need not doubt that the georgous scenery is real. The blizzard, the ice, and the fields are real. In fact, Pelle Hvenegaard was named 12 years before the production after Pelle from the novel. Pelle is an uncommon Swedish name. His acting was so good that one forgets this was a movie. The ending put me in tears. Although it was somewhat predictable, it still packed an emotional punch. It took my breath away. I can recommend this Academy Award winning movie to anyone. Review: Profoundly Moving - I cannot tell you how much I love this movie! There isn't any aspect of it; from script, to its luscious music and settings, to acting, to very touching and stirring scenes that has not moved me greatly. I highly recommend this work of art, often celebrated with numerous awards. I have repeatedly watched it over and over for close to twenty years, and I'm always glad to see it again.

A magnificent performance by Von Sydow
A quite good movie, with a truly great performance by Max Von Sydow. The film itself is overlong, and a bit too crowded with sub-plots that don't get developed enough. On the other hand, the intricate, specific details of the sad, Dickensian world of this Danish farm in the late 19th century feel real, harsh, and often fascinating. The young boy playing Pelle is good, but not as great as the role calls for. But Von Sydow is so subtle, so heartbreaking, so complex that he almost lifts this into 'great film' territory just by himself.

A beautiful;but sad story
A wonderful story of an old man and his son. What they went through trying to adjust to living in Denmark after leaving Sweden is sad. I find it hard to believe that a father would send such a young child to go off to nobody knows where in the snow. The l ending could’ve been handled better than that.

Wonderful film by Bille August.
A wonderful and at times brutal tale of Pelle The Conqueror. Directed by Bille August (Barbette's Feast amongst others) this film has Max Von Sydow in a leading role as Pell's dad. The rest of the cast, well almost, is the cream of the crop of Danish character acters; and a few Swedes, "thrown" in for good measure. (You might be able to tell I'm Danish). Don't let the fact that you'll have to read subtitles scare you away from this movie, you would be missing a cracking film if you do. Most of the film takes place on a little known (outside of Denmark, Sweden & Germany ) island Bornholm. Situated between southern Sweden and the German/Polish border, in the Baltic sea, this island is very different to the rest of Denmark. So if you want to learn a bit more about the Danish countryside less familiar, this is the film for you. Oh, and did I say? It's a brilliant film!

Danish/Swedish Masterpiece
"Pelle the Conqeror" won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film back in 1988 and that, for me, is generally a category that warrents a look. Pelle did not fail me because it is an outstanding movie. It's a sort of "Giants in the Earth" with a shorter emigration trip. A man somewhat up in years travels from Sweden to Denmark with his young son (roughly 10-12 years old). The goal is a better life than what they left behind in Sweden (along with their recently deceased wife/mother). As the ship lands, many are hired right off the boat but there is little interest in the combination of two males; one too old and the other too young. They eventually get a job but one in which neither employer nor employee got what they were looking for. Pelle is the young lad and it is through his perspective that most of the movie emerges and what a series of events we see. There are many relationships, insults and injuries, deaths and drownings, love and hatred, joys and sorrows in this 2 1/2 hour movie. Yet, with all that happens, it seems to move along very well. The writer/director Bille August deserves great praise (and the Oscar) for weaving together a snapshot of life in this small community that Pelle and his father find themselves. The character development and the humanity on display create a most compelling series of vignettes. The final scene fortells the movies title in a way in which we can believe. As we anticipate Pelle's future, we can't help but remember his recent past.

Excelente pelicula.

Desgarradora. Imprescindible. Merecidísimo Oscar a mejor película extranjera.

"Best young Actor in a foreign Film" für Pelle Hvenegaard. Meine Wertung: 5 Sterne Eboku
