The film itself, however, is good and the dramatic music that accompanies it complements the unfolding drama on screen. 'Endless Love' is basically Shakepeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' transported to 1980s America. Indeed, director Franco Zeffirelli had adapted the tragic play to the big screen with considerable success back in 1968. 'Endless Love' is based on the Scott Spencer novel (1979) and stars Brook Shields and newcomer Martin Hewitt. The story begins in suburban Chicago, where 15-year-old Jade Butterfield (Shields) and 17-year-old David Axelrod (Hewitt) fall in love after being introduced by Jade's older brother, Keith. The Butterfields' bohemian lifestyle, for which they're well known in their community, allows Jade and David to develop an all-consuming and passionate relationship, including allowing them to have sex in Jade's room. As time passes, David develops an obsessive love for Jade that becomes very concerning for Jade's family, especially her father, who considers his daughter too young to be so seriously involved in a romance that distracts her from her studies and keeps her up all night. The father attempts to end the relationship and at one point in the story threatens to kill David should he come near his daughter again. The scene is now set for a showdown between the two families and in particular between Jade and David. I liked 'Endless Love' because it was a very real and uncomplicated story of love and the obsessive feelings one can develop for the loved object. Both Brook Shields and Martin Hewitt are attractive and it is quite 'reasonable' to see the two of them fall madly in love with each other. Of course, obsessive love comes with its sometimes dangerous idosyncracies but that's what makes David's behaviour interesting to watch. At one point in the story, he acts on advice from a school mate called Billy (Tom Cruise in his first role) who suggests he start a fire at Jade's family home and then come to her rescue so that he will be seen as a hero and knight in shining armour. Despite the poor critical reception, the film was a box office success. It made $4,163,623 on its opening weekend and went on to gross $31,184,024 in total, becoming the twenty-second highest earning film domestically in 1981. ('Superman II' was the highest grossing movie that year.) In 1983, Brook decided to leave acting for a while so that she could return to school, while Martin spent the rest of the1980s appearing in forgettable B movies and doing the occasional TV guest spot. He later left acting all together and became a businessman. Definitely worth a watch now that it's available free here at desertcart Prime. Review: An All Time Classic Movie - This movie has been a constant thought in my mind, ever since i first watched it on my friend`s VHS tape recorder way back in the late 80`s? And is a reminder of `My Very Own First Love`. Which was in it`s early stage at the time i saw this film? My partner & i also had the struggle`s,trouble & then the predetermined divide, that we both had to endure from each & every one of our disapproving family member`s?We seemed to be Doomed to fail right from the start of our relationship? We battled, fought & defied every single rule laid out for us to follow & comply with (from our families) in order for them to keep us apart & prevent me & my partner from making Anykind of contact between the two of us (ever?) again? Much like & extremely similar to the story portrayed in `Endless Love`? This Classic Love Story will inevitably conjure up & bring back to mind `All Your` Forgotten Memories & those uncontrollable Intense Emotion`s & Feeling`s of pure unadulterated Love,Total Commitment (& of course?) The Extreme Length`s & Sacrifice`s,you would so easily make (without giving it a second thought?) just to spend as much Extra time as you possibly could with that `Special Person`? A Guilty Pleasure
How rare it is for the theme song for a movie, to be bigger than the actual movie!?!?! But "Endless Love" was certified Double Platinum (2 mil) as a single, spawned a platinum soundtrack score (1 mil), earned an Oscar nod, 5 Grammy nominations and a couple of American Music Awards. While the movie was massacred by the critics and grossed less than a few million. Still, I enjoyed its "made for television" movie script and over the top drama as the lovesick male lead burns down Brooke Shield's parents home.......you never heard from the lead actor again, .....Hewitt? was his name.

Unusually I preferred the more recent remake.
Amazingly not a good as the more recent remake in my opinion, a muddier production, but worth a watch to compare.

The guy Looks just like jamie Dorman
I've watched the remake of this and preferred the storyline that one to this one, but the guy in this one is much better looking than the new one, in fact he looks so much like Jamie Dorman.. It's unreal..the eyes, nose and hair are exact..
