As with most Cold Steel products, it is decent quality. It feels solid and should hold up to some abuse. It came sharp but I read some reviews saying that others weren't sharp enough out of the box.

Is the blade 18 inches long?

Yes. It is NOT 44 inches long. It's just a machete designed like a sword. I like it though! Its really good quality.
