The details show Product dimensions and a Size, they are not the same. Please explain the difference.

These are 6 stackable trays that are the dimensions as stated with the product. 4 1/8 x 5 3/4 x 3"

Would these be good for battery storage for various sizes AAA, AA, D, etc.?

I think these would work perfect for batteries. You can't really see it on the picture but there is a one inch lip in the front opening to hold thingsin. You may not be able to store more than 4*6 D size in one bin of this size. Hope that helps! :-)

Does this product come with hanging rails? Mine arrived without them

Thanks for your question. This pack does not include rails. Here are a couple of hanging options: Louvered Panel: https://www.amazon.com/Akro-Mils-30136-Louvered-Mounting-AkroBins/dp/B003BT4G8Y OR 48" Rail: https://www.amazon.com/Akro-Mils-30148-48-Inch-Mounting-AkroBins/dp/B000EFPI94

are these sturdy enough to hold text books?

They're sturdy but much too small for books
