If these discs have a 1/2" arbor hole and weigh less than 2lbs, then yes

We do not recommend this, as the backing plate can get off balance.

Can I use this lap and polisher for pieces of steel, nickel, or other metals?

It's more for lapidary work, drips water onto diamond discs. Try 3M fiber polishing wheels (6" x 1" wide) on a bench grinder. They work great on any metal.
