RØDE RØDECaster Pro II All-in-One Audio Production Studio

I'd heard so much about this audio production board over the past couple of years that I finally thought I should get one. As a longtime audio engineer, I honestly didn't think it could possibly live up to the hype. Only moments after setting it up, I realized how much this unit was going to simplify my life. With its intuitive, almost plug-and-play design, you can produce quality podcasts and audio recordings right out of the box. Of course, you'll need microphones, headphones, cables, and even a microSD card, but notwithstanding these requirements, this piece of kit delivers great audio quality. One area I'm still not sure about is its ability to sync a multitrack session in a DAW. Although there are video tutorials available, they don't match the behavior I'm experiencing. When assigning tracks, I have no reliable way of knowing what is what and end up having to guess. Microphones go to one channel, but the USB output isn't working for me in Audition. I suppose I may have to actually read the manual for this information. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this purchase! The unit has exceeded my expectations for ease of use and audio quality, even if I'm still working through some of the more advanced features. The latest firmware update includes a CallMe feature, a plugin by a third party developer that is free in the upgrade. You are able to connect to other RodeCaster Pro II's or RodeCaster Duo's for crystal clear calls. Really, this feature alone has upgraded my remote podcasting capabilities like nothing else!

The RØDECaster Pro II is easily one of my favorite pieces of audio gear. The sound quality is excellent, the preamps have plenty of clean gain, and the amount of control and flexibility is incredible. I use it for vocals, music, recording, and content creation, and it handles everything beautifully. There’s a learning curve because it can do so much, but once you understand it, it becomes the heart of your entire setup. Absolutely love it!

The RØDE RØDECaster Pro II is hands-down one of the best pieces of gear I’ve ever bought for content creation. Calling it “all-in-one” almost undersells it — this thing replaces a mixer, interface, sound board, and a chunk of your software chain in one clean, professional unit. The preamps are seriously impressive. My mic sounds fuller and cleaner than it ever did on my old interface, and I don’t have to crank gain or fight noise. The built-in processing (EQ, compression, noise gate, de-esser) makes it easy to get that polished “radio/podcast” sound without spending hours tweaking settings. Workflow-wise, it’s a dream. The touchscreen is fast and intuitive, everything is laid out logically, and the pads are perfect for intros, sound effects, stingers, or quick transitions. It makes recording feel effortless, whether you’re doing podcasts, streaming, voiceovers, or YouTube narration. It also handles multiple sources like a champ — mics, headphones, phones, computers — and it just works without the usual headache of routing and troubleshooting. The build quality feels premium, and it looks like pro gear because it is. If you’re serious about audio and want a setup that levels you up immediately, the RØDECaster Pro II is worth every penny.

I paid much less than the main rodecaster pro 2 price and I think it is great. It takes getting used to but I think that part is pretty fun. It’s something to tune to your personal needs and 9 times out of 10 it will fit them. If you’re expecting to get it working perfectly in under 30 minutes or even 1 day, you are mislead. I waited until after I had set it up to post a review because it’s important that I am familiar with what it is capable of. I would honestly recommend it for anything, even purposes it was not made for. (Obviously while understanding what you’re doing is not what this machine is intended for). But I would not pay the full $700 for it, not because I knew about Amazon’s price, but because $700 is still too pro level for regular users like me. Absolutely generational product.

I’m a streamer and make YouTube videos. For the past several years I’ve been using my goXLR mini to connect my Shure SM7B to my PC and I’ve never had problems. It is truly plug and play and while the software is a bit “meh”, the mini just works and everyone loves my mic sound (even without a cloud lifter). So fast forward to today and I found the Rodecaster Pro 2. It features way more faders, dual USB interfaces for connecting multiple PCs, possibly better preamps with more noiseless gain available for my mic, and more inputs with individual headphone amps with independent volume control as well. It’s an absolute beast. But I read a lot of reviews both here and on YouTube and have clearly been issues. So it finally looked like the firmware/software was at a spot where the features were really coming into maturity a bit and I took the $699 plunge and ordered one. The next day the Pro 2 arrived and I was so excited to see about getting her set up. Well, I never got her to power on. Didn’t matter where I plugged it in, through my UPS with clean power, direct into the wall, with a separate USB C power supply, nothing. No power on, and then an electrical burning smell and even a little smoke from the area of the power input. No bueno, returned and ordered a second unit. Two days later, receive a second unit and this one powered right up. Got it setup and firmware updated immediately via Ethernet and then plugged in my mic and headphones and got those all set up. Now it came time to connect to my 2 PCs and I can not get USB 1 to connect to ANYTHING. Not with the supplied cable, a USB 2 to USB C cable, a USB 3 to USB C cable, anything at all. Not plugged into to either PC or my iPad Pro. It just won’t work at all. USB 2 input will connect to all of the above, using any of the cables I mentioned before. Tried to contact Rode customer service and it was very difficult to find a phone number as their website was somehow down the entire day. Like seriously? How convenient! The day I need support their entire website is gone. 504 bad gateway. Somehow I extracted a phone number and got in touch with a very friendly customer service guy and he was helpful and sorry that I was already on my second unit. We tried a few things and it really looked like USB 1 was just not working. So they wanted a hardware profile of my 2 PCs, which I sent in after some email instructions, and got an email back recommending that I try to connect to USB 1 via a USB hub as USB standards have some dubious implementations according to Rode. They explained that USB1 can connect to external storage devices as well as PCs and mobile devices so it is a bit different than USB 2’s interface, which I can almost understand. Just now I’m thinking “who ever heard of any of these sorts of problems?” USB just works. Well not in this case, apparently. So I found what looked like a nice USB hub on Amazon and waited another day for shipping to catch up to me and here I was trying it all again with renewed excitement. Same issues. Nothing connected to USB 1 with or without the hub, but everything works on USB 2 with or without the hub. So I’m stumped, and they haven’t responded to my latest email telling them about these new issues. So I’ll tell you what, this unit is $700, can’t connect to a PC properly and per reddit and buried reviews here on Amazon has a lot of USB issues. I’m just not happy. I don’t want to return it a second time and gamble another $700 on whether a third unit will work or not. I’m very frustrated and have had to reconnect my goXLR mini several times, which at least I know works. I even have the plastic dust shield coming in later today and I’m thinking it’s just all going back and I’m sticking with my goXLR mini with $700 back in my pocket. It’s not what I want to do but this unit just doesn’t seem well polished at all. Some great ideas, just not well implemented, and possibly cheaped out on something as simple as a USB C interface. So, not cool. I’m in customer service limbo here after several days, 2 units, a dust shield purchase, and a USB C hub I didn’t need or want in the first place and I still don’t have a working setup. Not what I expect from products in this price range that are supposed to be premium. P.S.: Can I also mention how odd it is for a piece of equipment to expect to connect to another device via USB C? Especially a PC? A Mac, ok I get it they love USB C, but what other device plugs in to USB C on a PC? You’ll always find a USB C to USB A cable used. Turns out that probably still works for the Rodecaster Pro 2 but they don’t supply that cable, only USB C to USB C. But they sure as heck will sell you any other cable you need at $20 a pop. Still wouldn’t help me, of course, because USB 1 on this unit won’t connect to a single thing regardless of cable type. Sigh…

Absolutely LOVE this unit! Expensive, but worth it. I use it not only for my podcast (really appreciate the Bluetooth feature for call-ins), but for mixing music in Logic as well. You can get really prices with the microphone calibration and effects to nail the perfect sound you want. It makes my $50 Fifines sound like $400 Shures. Of, and I run it all from my iPad, not even a real laptop!

We’ve been using the RØDECaster Pro II for our 3-person podcast setup for a few years now, and it’s been a fantastic piece of equipment — intuitive, powerful, and well worth the investment. Recently, after a firmware update, our unit unexpectedly stopped working. It was outside of the standard 2-year warranty period, which was understandably concerning. However, RØDE’s customer support team was responsive and thorough from the start. They walked us through troubleshooting steps and, when that didn’t resolve the issue, asked us to send the unit in for evaluation. Unfortunately, the unit couldn’t be repaired, but they replaced it with a brand new one. Aside from the cost of shipping the original unit to them, there were no additional charges. I share this not to suggest that issues are common (they aren’t — this was the first problem we’ve had), but because it’s rare these days to see a company truly stand behind its products. That level of support matters, especially for professional gear at this price point. Highly recommend both the product and the company behind it.

The RØDECaster Pro II is hands down the best audio hub I’ve ever used. My SM7B finally shines the way it should, and even the PodMic sounds shockingly good through the Revolution preamps. The processing chain is killer, the workflow is smooth, and the customization is endless. This thing is a powerhouse.

(Review updated June 4, 2023) When it comes to anything technical about the device: if you can't find it on the site, safe to just assume they won't tell you. Sometimes it would be nice to know just a little more about the internals but each time I ask I'll get a generic response about not being able to provide this information. For a technical product this is a bit of a bummer and I hope that changes and they become more open with developers. This includes innocent things like what Bluetooth codecs it supports. They've built this on the hard work of others who contributed to opensource software and Linux but Rode themselves are currently not so eager to do the same. They have many YouTube videos showing the insides and features, but it's all secretly just self-promotion bragging about how revolutionary everything is and how they've started from the ground up. WITH THAT SAID they're one of few companies that actually pick up a phone and talk to you. So while they may not give me the technical details I want, at least they're not completely hidden from view and impossible to reach. The people you can reach by phone have always been friendly. UPDATES AND BETA FIRMWARE This has a lot going for it as an almost standalone unit. The vendor is still releasing updates regularly, and even without the updates it works right out of the box. However I really wish they would be more open about the technical stuff. To get at most of the fun stuff, you'll need to run the BETA firmware they offer. If you run this, they won't even attempt to support you or accept your bug reports. BLUETOOTH The Bluetooth (when connected to mobile) stays connected but after many hours the actual audio portion of it crashes. Because everything like logs are hidden from view you'll never know why. The only way to get audio back is restarting the device. I've tried several Android phones at this point and all the same issue. The "Disconnect Bluetooth" button on the RCP becomes non-responsive. The audio supported by Bluetooth is basic, low quality and has a lot of latency as you would expect when using the cheapest possible Bluetooth hardware. If you plan to use Bluetooth for mobile audio I would just reconnect it at the start of each day and you're likely fine. For me this is annoying because I forget to do this and it's only a matter of time till the connection drops. If you need better audio from a mobile device just connect it directly using the audio inputs. ACCESSORIES Getting your hands on accessories (like the dust cover) is was nearly impossible in Canada except as a special order item or shipping from cross-boarder. Might I suggest B&H (who I believe also might sell on here). SLIDERS Overall the sliders feel great but I think they missed the boat when omitting motorized sliders like other streaming products. They're ahead of others by featuring nice metal components here but regardless there's something magical about seeing them move on their own. NETWORKED: BUT IT'S NOT FOR YOU It's online for whatever reason (firmware updates supposedly needing this 24/7 online access... what?) but there's zero fun you can have with that. You can't control anything remotely, there's no public API, and basically zero information about it. If you ask about it you'll get a canned response. If you want to do anything using their software it'll take place over USB and proprietary software. LINUX SUPPORT As of Ubuntu 23.04 I was able to get both Main and Chat working with Pulse at the same time without needing extra hardware or hacks. I don't know who to thank for this since Rode won't comment, but a huge thank you to whoever solved this!
