What exactly does the little wrench hex key do?

Each of the spikes has a whole on the side the hex key helps you to hold it so you can tighten them. But I noticed one problem. The holes are too small for the hex key so you must use a channel lock or pliers to hold them as you tighten them.

Don’t recall but there were directions.
