Chinese Propaganda Posters

I have received two Taschen books this week of identical format - large, "coffee table" editions. Both came packaged in thick brown paper, but there was no other safety material around them. One arrived in perfect condition and the other did not, as may be seen here. As this book is as much an aesthetic experience as an informational one, this does detract from the item significantly. Onto the content: this book is a window onto a reality that few of us will ever experience. The words are those of the people who lived through the era, and who quite frankly speak of the uplifting feelings and strength that they received from the posters, and the relationship that they had with them. There are very many books in the west published about the horrors of the era, and I would not choose to live under a totalitarian regime, myself. However, if you want to gain a deeper appreciation for the way of life that this meant for millions without simply wallowing in anti-Marxist triumphalism (which I enjoy myself from time to time, I must be honest to say), this book is a beautiful way to do so. The artistry in the posters themselves is deep and effective, the collection and presentation thoughtful and masterful, and the overall published work a great edition to my collection. 5 stars for content.

Mi sarebbe piaciuto se ci fossero state più informazioni in questo libro, ma le immagini ampie e numerose ripagano questa mancanza. Non che non ci siano descrizioni per ogni poster, ma avrei preferito qualche digressione storica per contestualizzare meglio ciascuna immagine. Le informazioni poi sono in 3 lingue, quindi una buona parte dello spazio viene preso dal testo identico tradotto in inglese, francese e tedesco. L'italiano è assente. Si tratta comunque più di un libro illustrativo che di un libro da vera lettura. Le immagini hanno un'ottima definizione e riempiono le pagine, inoltre molte tra queste sono difficili da trovare e sono il risultato di selezioni e ricerche durate anni da parte dell'autore. E' bene sottolineare che non si tratta di un libro per glorificare la propaganda del regime cinese, ma di un libro divulgativo sulla propaganda del regime. Oltre all'aspetto storico e politico, risulta molto interessante anche da un punto di vista puramente artistico. In conclusione, lo consiglio e spero di essere stato utile.

This book is big, with high quality glossy pages. I collect propaganda books, and many even if they are large, the pictures are blurry and not great quality. This book is certainly not in that category. Wonderful spreads, captions and descriptions. This is a must have for anyone who studies this kind of art
