Question 1

Product dimensions shows 16.53 pounds - Shipping weight is 7.5 pounds.  Is the box filled with helium???

All weights listed are in US pounds, not Kg.  The weight of the unit is 5.51 pounds (2.49929396 kg) and the shipping weight is 7.2 pounds (3.26586506 kg.)  No helium included!   Hehe.

Question 2

Is there a way to use this as a spectrum analyzer ? an sa can cost easily as much as this scope. i am impressed.

You can find the section on FFT (frequency analyzer) on page 119 of the User Manual - link to the manual is here on this page. Just as a side note, there are plenty of people (like myself) who use a scope for audio electronics where no signal has frequencies much over 100kHz, and spectrum analysis is useful way to study the quality and/or characteristics of filters.

Can this model be upgraded by the USB ?

I have seen 1 update to the SDS1202X-E since I have had it.  The update was done by placing the update file on a USB drive, and then selecting the file.  It was quick and easy.

Question 4

What type of probes are you guys using with these? Will 100mhz probes work on this 200mhz machine?

Accepted Answer

You can use any probe you wish.  Using a 100MHz probe with a 200MHz scope is somewhat restrictive.  The Oscilloscope is a tuned instrument and should be used according to the manufacture's specifications and recommended operation.  Tektronix has an excellent white paper on what an Oscilloscope probe is and how to select the proper one for the scope you have.  I suggest you read that paper (on the Tektronix web site) as this will answer all or most of your questions.

The two probes that come with the scope are rated at 200MHz and should be used as the "standard" // default probes.  I use Tektronix 400MHz probes, which insure that the input device is capable of processing at and above the scope's rated bandwidth.
