Approximately how long do the batteries last?

I can`t say exactly don`t use the camping light that often. More for around the house and garden. But I do still have the original batteries put in at purchase.

Is it bright enough to read by?

I think so, it is pretty bright. You'd probably want to hang it up by its hook or the magnet though.
