Hayward AXV408P Automatic Pool Cleaner, Gear Box Assembly

I replaced pretty much everything in my Hayward pool cleaner and saved hundreds of $ by doing it myself. This was another item I needed and it works well. Watch a YouTube video and voila as good as new.

After years of hard work, my Hayward Navigator was barely moving. The best thing about the Hayward is that it's extremely simple to work on with just a screw driver. I decided to get mine back in tip top shape. I started with a new this gear box (AXV408P) plus the "internals" kit (AXV621DAT). That got mine moving again. I thought I should probably also replace the wings and feet (AXV414604WHP) because mine were showing wear. I also opted for new legs (AXV417WHP). That got my Hayward moving forward but it wasn't turning around at the end of the pool. I decided to replace the top gears (AXV079VP). My very top cone gear looked OK and probably didn't need to be replaced but I found an Amazon Warehouse deal for $17 so I ordered it (AXV070) and a new bushing for the top cone (AXV306). With all that I have my pool robot back up and running. It took a bit of time to track down all the parts so I'll post a copy of this review with each of the kits I've ordered and hopefully save you a bit of time.

My pool company kept saying there was debris in my gears, clean reassemble and repeat and repeat and repeat. They want $80 for this same part. I got it here for about $20 and changed it myself. Boom fixed. My old gears were worn and the looseness would cause them bind up and make my pool sweep only go left. Sometimes only go right, just depended on where it got stuck at. It always seemed good after cleaning but would go bad in a day or two. This fixed the problem.

I refurbished my Hayward Navigator with this and two other packs. I inherited this pool vacuum but it has to be at-least 5 years old, if not 6-8 years. I found a YouTube video and was able to swap out all the moving parts myself in about 15-20 mins. The refurbishment, using Hayward parts instead of off brands, was still less than a third the cost of a cheap new pool vacuum and it runs beautifully now. Not sure if off brand parts work as well but for the price I don’t want to waste time/money finding out. Also the prices online were half of what my local pool store charges for the same item.

Navigator was getting stuck against walls. I tested the gears and they seemed fine, but I couldn't fix the problem so I decided to just replace the gearbox anyway. Turns out the old gearbox was coming apart at the top so if you just turned the gear in 1 dimension, they wouldn't slip, but if you pulled up and turned, they slipped. New gear box installed and it's working great. Plus it was on sale! Bonus. Bag says Hayward, but it does say made in China on the back even though the ad says Country Of Origin: United States. What are you gonna do?
