desertcart.com: The Maid: A Novel (Audible Audio Edition): Lauren Ambrose, Nita Prose, Random House Audio: Audible Books & Originals Review: Modest but masterful - This novel by a veteran of the publishing world is charming and well-crafted. What sets it apart is that it is narrated by a protagonist who, though it is never stated, would be identified as neuro-divergent or on the autism spectrum. Prose uses her early-life experience in direct care to create a sympathetic heroine, and despite the challenges of such a daring approach, she is convincing and authentic throughout the story, which is a testament to her sensitivity as a caregiver and her skill as a writer. Her other characters are no less interesting and developed, the plot has enough twists and turns to keep us engaged, and the setting itself, a smallish but grand hotel in an unspecified city in an unspecified country, plays an outsized role. There is a warmth to the storytelling that adds to the experience, but the characterizations, and in particular the inclusiveness of spirit, make this an exceptionally gratifying read. Review: Surprisingly great read - I wish I could give half stars. Solid 4.5 star book. Definitely an interesting read with a surprise twist. It was a bit slow to start otherwise but became hard to put down after awhile.

Murder mystery is a genuine pleasure to read
Occasionally, you’ll encounter a character in a book you wish you could know in real life. Molly Gray is this character. She is a maid in a five-star hotel and takes her job just as seriously as a neurosurgeon would. Molly was raised by and lived with her grandmother, whom she recently lost. Though she has lived through hard times, Molly has a gracious attitude. Molly has not only lost her grandmother; she has been taken advantage of by a so-called boyfriend who robbed her and left her destitute. She is late on her rent and walks to places to save money. That isn’t the end of Molly’s difficulties. She is aware that she is unlike other people. She misreads social cues, and her earnestness and childlike trust get her into trouble. One thing can be said about Molly; she is unfailingly kind to everyone she meets, even those who are not always kind to her. She is a meticulous worker, so she is often assigned to take care of the rooms of important guests. She finds the occupant dead in the room of one such guest. In her efforts to do the right thing, she becomes a target. Thus begins a murder mystery that has Molly entangled in murder charges. I have rarely read a book where I got so invested in the main character. This is an excellent read for anyone who likes a good story, mystery or not. (It’s also a top-notch mystery; the twists and turns will leave the most avid armchair sleuth guessing.) The characters are utterly believable. It’s my favorite book of the year.

3.5 stars. Enjoyable but also frustrating
3.5 stars. After all the hype, I wanted to like this novel more than I actually did. However, I did enjoy reading it and was interested in learning how the plot would resolve itself, and what would become of each of the characters. ***spoiler alert*** From the outset it becomes evident that the main character, Molly, is on the autism spectrum but has carved out a life for herself in routine and hard work, even after the death of her beloved grandmother who was her guardian. Molly's lack of guile gives an interesting perspective to the events surrounding the death of a guest and the interactions with those immediately involved and we want her to succeed, even as others take advantage of her. Most of the characters were interesting and well drawn. However, there were several aspects of the novel which I found frustrating. Charlotte's character feels very much contrived as someone who conveniently becomes a savior. Mr. Preston alludes to knowing Molly's grandmother very well and knowing more about her family, yet this is never explained or brought up again, and Molly shows no great interest in finding out more, in spite of this absence of family being such a factor in her life. The character of Juan Manuel also feels somewhat contrived and I did not really buy into the romance. In short, I enjoyed the novel and Molly's character, but had to look past some of the plot/character elements.

A character-focused mystery
The Maid is murder mystery centered on Molly Gray, a meticulous hotel maid at the Regency Grand whose life is turned upside down when she finds a wealthy guest dead in his suite and then becomes the prime suspect. Narrated in Molly’s distinct voice, the story blends cozy mystery with character-driven narrative, exploring themes of invisibility, difference, friendship, and self-worth as Molly navigates suspicion and seeks the truth. The author, Nita Prose, created a quirky and memorable protagonist whose obsessive attention to detail and unconventional worldview make her both endearing and frustrating. Overall, The Maid is a cozy, character-focused mystery that I found delightful without being too heavily on charm over plot complexity.

Easy read
Started a bit slow. It was still a nice story. The characters were interesting enough to stick with the book.

The Maid by Nita Prose
I finished The Maid quickly, but I kept thinking about it long after. What initially presents itself as a cozy mystery becomes something more thoughtful — a story about innocence, literal thinking, and how easily someone can be misunderstood. Molly Gray is a fascinating narrator. Her strict routines, moral clarity, and literal understanding of the world shape every interaction, and the novel’s decision not to label her with a diagnosis feels intentional and respectful. Instead of telling us who Molly is, Nita Prose lets us experience the world as Molly does — and that choice gives the book its emotional weight. Some of the most powerful moments are also the most uncomfortable. Situations that appear suspicious or morally unclear from the outside are, from Molly’s perspective, acts of care or honesty. The novel quietly asks the reader to reconsider how intent, truth, and responsibility are judged. By the end, The Maid is not just a mystery to be solved but a character study that stays with you. It’s an engaging, compassionate, and surprisingly thought-provoking read — one I genuinely enjoyed and would recommend.

Book came with yellow stains at the corners… looks very used.

The book keeps one's interest, as it slowly reveals information about the main character as she relates what she is doing and how she interacts with others. At first she seem simple, then the realisation that she is autistic makes sense of everything. A picture is drawn in a realistic way and the truth about characters is revealed during conversations between them and her. You find yourself willing her to realise the truth and not to be so literal. It is a mystery story but the main enjoyment is following the story through her eyes.

La storia e' originale ed avvincente. L'inglese scorrevole, molto utile per fare pratica.

Very good reading. When you think you found the vilan, you are taken to another character. At the same time, a light reading.
