I purchased the layering colors and I have swatched them and I am very pleased. I love the colors but I haven’t used them in any artwork yet. The packaging is very nice and the inclusion of a sample of ox gall is helpful although I haven’t used it yet. I’m looking forward to trying it. In general I have been pleased with Paul Ruben’s paints that I have been using for many years now. I believe that Ruben’s was my first quality watercolor palette over 45 years ago. When I poured them I did not experience any separation and they handled nicely. It’s always fun to see a new selection of Paul Ruben’s watercolors :).

Good for monochrome chineese style drawing especially landscapes or mixed media. Too dark to use for layering.

I like these water color paints, just think they are a little too high in price. But they are 15ml tubes and the colors are unique which is what I wanted. I wish they would have had them in 5ml tubes at a lesser price.

Do not buy this paint it's old. The ox gall is dried up and empty. I ordered. Returned. Waited on a replacement and it's defective too.

Very cool granulation and packaging.

First off, the presentation for this set is outstanding! The round box lid art is gorgeous! The box may look small but it's 9 1/2" in diameter & 1 1/2" thick. Each tube is nestled in its own foam lined space. There is a small jar in the center for ox gall liquid (to be used along with the paints). FYI: *Make sure to have a spare palette or containers handy, to save any paint that first comes out when the lid is removed! (*Do this with any unopened tube of paint) The paints are gorgeous & react differently on various kinds of paper. My one issue is the ox gall. The jar was completely empty by the time I received the set. The ox gall had leaked into everything in the box which was warped in places from it. I exchanged that set, but the replacement had the exact same damage/issue. I kept the replacement set & ended up buying a separate bottle of ox gall (which just happened to be on sale on Amazon at the time). The set is lovely, but gets even more costly than it already is when having to buy a separate bottle of ox gall. I don't think I'd buy it as a gift since it may arrive damaged due to the ox gall leakage issue~

Pigments are beautiful and create wonderful blooms and texture. So glad I invested in them.

Presention is nice, Paints are lovely texture and bold colours, but the dual hue effect is not evident even when diluted to a wash or adding granulating fluid. There are no English labels or instructions on it so it's hard to work out what you have or how to use the fluid. Would have been better to have included a red/crimson and yellow/Ochre colour rather than 3 blue/green shades in a set of 6 tubes (the blue colour is more turquoise green not really blue) They are expensive even on sale for what you are getting. Very Nice colours but disappointed due to limited palette combo and no real separation effect (when diluted). And my tubes all had big dents in them even though box was sealed and tubes sitting in slots... very odd indeed.

Unable to work out what the colours are as it’s written in Chinese. There is also a small container of a ‘liquid’ with no idea what it is… this purchase is a waste of money.. Paul Rubens is in English so why is the whole purchase in Chinese??????

I love the paints and I purchased at a good price, but was very disappointed when I opened the box to find two tubes were only half full as there were holes in the tubing and binder had leaked and dried and the paint had shrunk and dried also. I let Amazon know the day they arrived but have heard nothing back from them so far. The photos show the holes in the two tubes and also the comparison of a full, good tube and a half empty one. Update October 1st 2025 Heard nothing back from the supplier or Amazon....would think twice about buying from the same seller as you don't know what condition the paint will arrive in.

Check your paints when you receive them! I discovered that one of the tubes was split after I had started to pour paints into pans. If I had noticed sooner, I would have returned them. On the packaging, a lot of people are complaining about a lack of English writing... they are a Chinese company! English speaking manufacturers don't put Chinese on their packaging, so manage your expectations and understand the country of origin. Use the internet, the Amazon listing or Google translate and carry on. About the paints themselves. They're quite concentrated and have some slight granulation/sedimentation of black pigment in each one. It is subtle and nothing like a Daniel Smith Lunar Blue type paint. The paints are more muted colors. They would work well for adding subtle texture for soil or slightly sand textured things, bricks, stones, etc. I'll slowly use these up or will give them to a friend but I wouldn't buy them again.
