The primary diameter that slides over the tip is definitely 1/2 inch. I believe there are two different diameters if memory serves, the smaller would be more like 13/32" and serves as the stop so that it won't slide further on. I don't have it in front of me, I'm going off of barrel dimensions as I was annoyed by mine and threw it away.
