It is plastic.  I did not find this product useful and would not recommend it to anyone.

Question 2

What is the battery supposed to do?  I put in 2 AAA batteries and moved what appeared to be the switch and nothing.  Anyone know what it is for?

Look closer and you will see 4 little glass looking dots. Each is a light emitting diode (led) like in the newer tvs. If the batteries are in right and the battery cover snapped closed, the most powerful 4 lights you could imagine occurs when you flip the switch. I use mine when reading books. When using my kindle I simply hit the bigger letter button. But I am in the middle of an English mystery series and I don't wanna pay $10 for a kindle copy I can buy used as a paperback or hardback for $3.17. WOW...just turned mine on...strong littler buggers...keep fiddling... it is rugged  for plastic. You do have to keep your temper when folding up the legs. The first time I think I had to reverse the batteries. Both need to be going the same way, right direction. Batteries last a long time. My led flashlight is 2 years old and has 3 of them with magnifiers.....shu

Could one put this on glass cut to size and then used to set over a cookbook to both enhance the text and hold the book open?

No, the legs are very flimsy and would not hold anything open. The magnifier is also very poor. I don't recommend this item, extremely cheap quality. The legs won't even stand on their own.

Question 4

Is the Lens Thin And Flexible or is it More Rigid? How is the Quality of the Maginication? Is it 3X times CLEAR ?

I purchased this for my 85 year old Dad.  He says it is flexible and the quality of the magnification is excellent.  He's very happy with it.  He can read very small print extremely clearly.
