Works well but has to be charged daily
Overall I think its a good product. I bought it for my puppy as I was concerned she might escape from the backyard. The activity tracking features are a fun bonus to me. I like that I can set virtual fences that alert me if my puppy goes outside the virtual fence. I have a small house so the virtual fence doesn't go small enough to be just my house, however it gets small enough that my puppy still can't go far before I get notified. And I think having it be that bit bigger than house means that I don't get false alarms. I enjoy the local leaderboard feature. I think its cute to be able to see how active other dogs in the area are. I also really like the light and noise features. I have started training my puppy to respond to the noise feature as a recall signal which I think will be great for for when they are off lead. My only real complaint is the battery life. I find that it needs to be charged basically every day. I find it easiest to charge it overnight just like my phone. It does charge fast enough though that I can also charge it while she naps during the day and have it on nearly 24/7. Just depends what you want to use it for. I put it on my cat to see where he goes outside and I did find that the battery lasted a lot longer as he barely moves all day. I only had to charge it every 2-3 days for the cat. So I think it depends on how active your animal is. My puppy is quite active. Shes up and running around and playing for about 5 hours everyday. As per some of the other reviews stating their tracker stopped working after about a month, I signed up for the $14 a month subscription, which i would recomend doing for at least the first month or 2 to make sure you like it and it works well in your area before commiting to the cheaper but upfront yearly plans as others have said if the product doesn't work they could not get a refund for the subscription only the tracker itself.

Great Tracker For the Price
On my second year of using this tracker for my two female hound dogs. I live in a rural area on the edge of a national forest. My two dogs have a penchant for running off on little "adventures" that take them miles and miles from our home. They always come back but there are hunters, ranchers with cattle, a moderately busy scenic highway nearby, coyotes, etc. etc -- plenty of hazards. I got the tracker so that I could go out and run the little rascals down and retrieve them when they take one of these jaunts and it has worked well for that. If I can get within 500 - 1000 feet of them and whistle they will come right to me, with a "Gee, you're out here too? You should have come with us, it was great!" look on their faces. The only slight drawback is that the tracking is dependent on 1) cell phone coverage and 2) GPS reception. Since our area is remote, mountainous and heavily forested both of these can be spotty or even non-existent depending on where the dogs are. The result is that they drop off the map for some period of time and then re-appear when the tracker gets in range of a cell signal and/or GPS. This coupled with the sparse road network means that it can take some time to run them down but over the last two years I have managed to run them down every time they have taken off. Sometimes it takes an hour or two but that is not the fault of the unit --- it's the environment I live in. I've found that the location the unit gives is very accurate. Live mode works very well if you have a strong enough cell/GPS signal. The unit has saved me a lot of worrying and fretting. Before I got it I would have no idea at all where they were and I would just have wait (and hope) they would not get into trouble and would find their way back. BTW, these two must have a biological GPS built into them because after I got the tracker I found that they would go up to 5 miles away and cover a track of 15 miles or so in just a few hours! With the unit I can know, with assurance, that (for instance) "Oh, they're running down the power line right of way to the lake, no big deal" or "They're over at the Smith's ranch, probably chasing calves so I better get them". So now, if I worry, at least it's more informed worrying! : > The unit seems to be durable and waterproof. This is my second year with it and it's holding up well. My dogs come back covered in mud, water, cockleburrs, etc. The unit is scratched up a bit but otherwise no worse for the wear. Battery life is very good. In our wifi power saving zone the battery would probably last up to a week (guessing). Out of the power saving zone and with a lot of live mode tracking I would estimate that battery life would be 1 -2 days. Can't really say for sure because I charge the unit every night, just in case. My dogs are getting a bit older now and are less adventurous; this unit helped me get them through their adolescence and was certainly worth every penny for the unit and subscription! UPDATE: February 2025 The battery on the tracker that I purchased nearly two years ago degraded to the point that I would have to charge it every night. The charge would barely last 24 hours, less if I was using live tracking. A couple of times it went flat while I was still out looking for my dogs. So, I bought another one. The newer model has an updated charging arrangement that is a cradle that securely snaps on to the tracker. The older model had a cord with a magnetic socket that was easy to detach so you had to be careful when setting it down or the connection would be lost. So the new charging arrangement is definitely an improvement. The newer model has great battery life. So far I have gone 3 - 4 day (with a fair amount of life tracking in there) without it dropping below 50%. This better than I got when my first unit was new so perhaps Tractive has improved some of the inner workings too. So -- not a complaint at all. I got almost two years use out of the first tracker and I think that is quite good. Nothing lasts forever, all things wear out and for the price (less than $50) I consider this good longevity. Great product, at least for me, and I will definitely renew my subscription (for the third year) come March when it expires.

Was TWO stars but I learned why it wasn't working well...!
Got the tracker. Downloaded the app and paid for a two year subscription. Then was instantly regretting it because I was charging this thing twice a day. Seriously, I got maybe 13 hours of use each day. I was set to return it (even ordered another one thinking I got a dud that had already been returned), then I did a search online and saw someone else had the same problem and it was a software issue. There is a setting in the Tractive App where you can set a "power saving zone". You draw a little box around your house and it won't track your dog while inside the house. My app didn't have this setting available. I emailed customer service and asked why. They are slow to respond but they do after a few days. They said I needed a software update and they would put me "on the list" for the next update which could take up to a week. This was weird. Couldn't she just do it instantly? Apparently not. Almost a week later, I checked the app and nothing. Had to email again. This time it happened within the hour. Now that the house is a power saving zone, the battery lasts a really long time if you aren't using it to actually track. I would guess it lasts at least a week if you don't leave the power zone. We didn't walk him one week at all and it saved the battery so battery life will be reduced by just walking your dog around the neighbourhood because it will ping constantly off the satellites. To save battery, remove it for walks. Just don't forget to put it back on! Finally, I saw other reviewers mentioned they had lost the tracker because it has four silicone clips that I could see fail if the dog is going through brush and twigs. We just wrapped a little velcro strap around it from the dollar store and it's not going anywhere! I now recommend this device. I don't worry if I see our gate is open. Peace of mind is priceless but definitely worth the cost of the live tracking subscription which is mandatory if you want it to work. People who complained that they had to pay a subscription fee don't understand how this thing works. UPDATE: I had to reduce the stars to four for accuracy. Every once in a blue moon I was getting an alert that "Harland has left your virtual fence" (This is another box you can set on your app that will alert you when the animal crosses it). I called home in a panic to ask my kids if he got out. He was next to them in the house. So you definitely get false readings until you set the power saving zone. Haven't gotten one since then.
