Why not put the spikes on both sides?

The spikes on one side are good for soft surfaces and will catch the bug most of the time, the flat side is for hitting them on solid surfaces, if you hit with the spikes they will eventually break off and you lose the smash and grab feature. Also you can hit with the flat side flip it over and pick it up with the spikes

Are the spikes silicone or plastic? I am constantly battling fruit fly's on my single pane old windows and don't want risk breaking them.

FRUIT FLY BATTLE, YES< I have same issue and what I do is; VACUUM with edge attachment is easiest way to get those and kitchen slightly damp cotton towel, leave vinegar/sugar concoction in 1 ounce cups with plastic and punch holes, last but not least every night before bed, spray every DRAIN with bleach water, you do these things, keep sinks clear, put fruit inside mesh bag (if out on counter) you will win the fruit fly battle!!=)

The handles are really thick and barely bend so your aim for in flight critters is always on target.
