We almost didn't buy this, due to the poor reviews we read here, but our 7 year-old Grand-daughter was fascinated with this thing, and had it at the top of her list, so we ordered it, even though we feared a flood of tears and disappointment when she opened it. We couldn't have been more wrong. She got a lot of toys and gifts on Christmas morning, but this was the first thing she wanted to open and try out. It comes with safety goggles, and she wore those all day (she still has them, and thinks they are cool to wear). She hammered on the "lump" with the "chisel" (a pointed wooden dowel) and the wooden mallet. She cleaned off the "gems" and rocks with the brush. She found 11 "gems" and some rocks (all about the size of a raisin or smaller) and because the box said there were 11 (or more) gems, she stopped after number 11. In short, she had a BLAST! As a bonus, we got to dump everything but the gems and rocks (and goggles) into the trash as soon as she finished - nothing to store! All in all, this was the best $15 toy we have ever gotten her.

I got this for my three year old, who is really into science. As it’s rated for age 8+, I knew it would be something we’d do together rather than something he’d play with independently. He is enjoying hammering while I hold the chisel, washing the gemstones himself, and matching them up to the images on the included poster. We’re working through the sand block in multiple sessions because of his young attention span. It’s a quality product that could work for kids of many different ages.
