Why when I record with this Cloudlifter I still get a lot of for a noise.

You should not get any noise, make sure the phantom power is on.

Is this what I need to help reduce background noise for a dynamic mic for spoken podcasts/streamimg?

Well, it CAN help depending on what is causing the background noise. If the noise is because you have to turn the amp up very high to get a good signal then yes, this will help. Be sure to use the 48v phantom power switch with it or it won't work at all.

How does it work with shotgun mics such as an NT5?

Probably not how you would expect. Rode nt5s are condenser mics and require phantom power. This is a passive line level booster and would boost a dynamic mic. Nt5s are really good mics though.

One of the cables didn't work. Kicking myself because I read the reviews AFTER I bought the cables (rookie mistake!) - reviews of people saying "Don't buy this bundle" for this exact reason. Lost hours of my life trying to work out the source of buzzing and lack of audio through my DAW.

I actually am much more impressed than I thought I'd be with this. The quality is incredible. Very sturdy and I love that it comes with two different cables so you can plug and play. It's essential when working on some podcasts to enhance the audio and reduce all of the noise and interference that comes with some of these audio decks or mics themselves. If you have a hard time getting good sound for your podcast mics, this might just help.
