Can this be used as a polisher?

Yes, this sander can be used as a polisher. However, you must be very careful; this tool has tremendous power. Start by doing a polishing test on an item that you don't mind messing-up.

Is the extra grip detachable?

Yes, the grip simply screws off the body. Also, the body has two threaded holes for attaching the grip: one for right-handed use and the other for left-handed.

What's the difference between this and the D26451?

This one is not random orbit, like the D26451. It also has a more powerful motor, but I find the D26456 to be the best sander. Definitely buy one with a variable speed, like D26453K over the D26451. I returned this model quickly and rely on D26456 for woodworking and home improvement where I need a nice finish. This model definitely didn't come close to meeting my needs.
