What is the cleansing component of this soap?  Its my understanding most soaps use lye or sodium hydroxide but I don't see that ingredient listed?

To answer your question it is important to understand that there is a difference between 'melt and pour' soap making and 'cold process' soap making. In the 'cold process' of making soap, different fats and oils like shea butter are combined with lye (which technically refers to sodium hydroxide) to produce solidified soap in a chemical process. This is called the 'saponification' process. Lye is a caustic substance and can damage your skin if you are exposed to it.
