Get Ready for the Code A (Explode the Code)

This book is such an amazing resource! Our homeschooled 5 y/o “loosely” works on school each day. We weren’t interested in pushing him when he wasn’t ready. That being said, we practiced handwriting, and did 1 letter a week. We made crafts and practice sounds and wrote the letter maybe 8-10x a day. He was very resistant and never wanted to do it. There are many studies suggesting that pushing a child when they’re not ready is the best way to create resistance for now AND the future. We’re trying to raise life long learners and want learned to be something they love. After all this we scaled back on the activities we were having him do and introduced “Get Ready for The Code A”. I’m so happy to say that he very much enjoys doing a few pages a day in this book and he fully recognizes F, B, and M along with their sounds!! He couldn’t remember that before. These books also teach the letters out of order. Once we started this book, I ordered the other primers and teachers guide. I’ve read that the teachers guide for this set isn’t necessary but I can create a review for it once it arrives to confirm/deny that.

My daughter is just beginning the process of identifying letters and learning phonics to build her reading skills. This book is a great beginner book. I love that it identifies a few main consonants and really focuses on learning them. There are a wide variety of skills used to support this learning. She loved all the various activities and it really helped cement those concepts. It would likely get to be too repetitive for a child who was moving quickly through the letters and sounds but it has been great for us with a bit of a slower pace. Love this program and this a great primer level option!

My son, who had no interest in school a few months ago, suddenly took a liking to this book. He raced through it a bit fast and has already moved onto the second (B) book, which is great. Mostly, the layout is exciting and fun for him, while presenting just enough of a challenge to keep him engaged in learning. I couldn't be happier, but the fact that he enjoys the book is even more rewarding. We skip the blank letter writing sections for now, but he finally enjoys doing the tracing (which is something he had no interest in doing prior). The other activities in the book are just perfect for his interest level and age.

I put together my own Preschool curriculum for my child and it was a bust. She became very board with it really quickly. After seeing several reviews, I decided to give this one a try. It has been a huge hit! My daughter really enjoys it and actually asks to do more. Highly recommend.

My son was struggling really bad with phonics/reading. We are 1/2 way through the school year and he still doesn't know his alphabet and what sounds the letters make. (Not because I suck at teaching. I think he has dyslexia and has not seen the Dr yet. He will next month). This book is awesome. He loves doing it. He's actually understanding it. He will know his alphabet and sounds before long. Awesome curriculum!!!

I bought this book for my 4 1/2 year old son. It took about 5 weeks to complete it, working at a very leisurely pace. Prior to starting this workbook, he did already know all of his letters and some of their sounds, but needed practice. He was also already writing his name (uppercase letters).I really liked the variety of exercises and how they reinforced the different letter sounds. I especially liked that the "circle the one that is different" activities were included as that is something he really had no concept of and by the end of the book he had almost mastered. I also like that there was lots of handwriting practice. Having said that, I would definitely recommend using a different handwriting method to teach the basics. I also would not use this as a primary method for teaching letter recognition. For what I used it for (reinforcing letter recognition and sounds), it was great! The only thing I didn't like was that it was a little difficult (especially for a child) to figure out what a few of the pictures were supposed to be. I do plan on ordering "Get Set For The Code" soon, though!

These books have worked wonders for my 5 year old son. They are just silly enough that it keeps him interested. My oldest son did not care for them at all. Whether they work for you or not will depend on the kid. But when they work for a child, they are amazing.

Wonderful workbook ... I think all 3 in this series should be put together in one book but I don't really mind having to purchase the other 2 separately, but if you want my advice ... Just buy A B and C together, that way if you want you can choose in which order you want your child to work on the letters. Great workbook!
