They are erasable if you have not written too hard. Otherwise, a faint mark may be left. However, I really like them because they do work well enough for sketching and even school work.

Do they come with lead in them?

Yes. They come with lead in but a few.

The product contains 1 pencil or 8?

This product contains all 8 pencils pictured. There is a purple, darker blue, light blue, green. yellow. orange, pink, and red. I think the yellow is a bit light colored for white paper, but the rest work fine even on white. The yellow works well on darker colored papers. It is not bright enough on typical book paper to use as a highlighter. The rest work fine for detailed highlighting and just general purpose highlighting as well as writing and drawing. I have been very pleased with this set. It is difficult to get the leads though, but they come with three per pencil which lasts for quite a while. The leads can be ordered in packs of 10 of each color. The problem is you need to order all 8 leads as a set. I usually use the green and red far more than the rest so I am starting to develop a collection of the rest of the colors.

Has anyone used them for marking on steel?

I have not but they would not be a good choice for steel. The ink would rub right off.

Good for causal/hobby coloring

Extremely good for coloring Madhubani paintings. I am not a professional artist. Just color when getting bored. But, the color control and the fine edges are very smooth.

Complete waste of money

It's terribly light and if you put some pressure lead will break, another issue your sketches will disappear within 2 days, that's shocking, complete waste of money, don't go for it.
