If they destroy or not the paint, the answer is depends on the paint / wall. If you're not sure if they destroy the paint, you can use another adhesive to stick them, that you know doesn't damage the paint or able to be taken off or away from the position occupied.

How big are the planets?

Largest the size of a half dollar down to size of a dime. They lasted a long time but choking Hazzard for small children. My grandson loves them
