Hi Connie, The XPress consists of a 200 lb stack. The Bench Press has a double-up feature that allows you to convert it from a max of 200 lbs to a max of 400lbs. The available Leg Press doubles the stack to 400lbs. All of the other stations are 200 lbs. This is a iron weight stack like you would use in the your local gym, so the resistance is true. Products that uses bows, bands and other gimmicky types of resistance are not.

I'm moving and wondering what is the simplest way to take it apart enough to fit through an avg. doorway?

It is difficult to move this machine, I think it is 600lbs you must have someone with mechanical ability and take plenty of picks to assist in reassembly. To fit through doorway remove leg press, press bar and weight stack. This should make it lighter and small enough hope this helps, Larry..

What kind of mat would be suitable to protect the carpets in a house from this machine?

Due to its weight(300 lbs?), your best bet might be a sheet(or more), of plywood. I do have mine sitting on carpet in the basement but I'm not trying to protect the carpet.
