Can you use either earbud for taking

I tried to spak on a phone call only with the left ear and people can't hear me, only when I put the righ earbud and take off the left one people hear me. I tried this a couple of times, taken each earbud off and asking the caller, they never hear me when I only have the left earbud on, so I believe the previous answer is incorrect.
