LiftMaster 828LM - Internet Gateway - Only Works with Security+ 2.0 Garage Door Openers - Smart Control for MyQ-Enabled Devices Including Gate Operators -Ethernet connectivity only, Black, Plastic

I struggled getting this device setup correctly because I misinterpreted the manual. This device is not capable of WIFI communications. It must be wired into your network where it can access the internet. These two points are key. The final point is that the unit must be within 400 feet of your garage door opener, gate opener or whatever remote device you are connecting to. You may need a second gateway if your intent is to control several devices that are far apart. This connection, to the end device, is a proprietary wireless connection, not WIFI. Enough with how I made this difficult, this device works great once configured properly. You need to setup an online account to start with and then connect the gateways to that account using the mobile app. Very intuitive to setup. Once the gateway is connected, adding your end devices is easy, just know where the program button is. In my case I connected to both personal and commercial garage door openers. The personal openers were easy, a button on the control panel in the garage. Commercial not so easy, I had to open the opener itself and push a button on the control board to start the programming sequence. Mine were 20 feet in the air so a man lift was needed, but easy to do. The app walks you through this process, again very intuitive and thought out. Fair warning only the L5 commercial openers have this capabilities, so check your openers first. You should check any opener to ensure it will work before ordering on the manufacturers website. My clients will not be buying $100.00 remotes for their door openers any more. They love not needing multiple remotes for all 5 of their openers, plus the security of knowing when they are open or closed wherever they are. They are planning on adding gateways to a second property so they don't need those remotes either. One device and an app takes care of all that. Thanks to the technical team at LiftMaster for their assistance in helping me get my install completed successfully.

There seems to be a number of now outdated videos to help setting up this device so I thought it worth while to provide more recent information. Even the most recent video I found seems to be slightly different than my experience but it was the most helpful. Having said all that, it is easier than I would have ever expected. 1. You will need to download the My Q app onto your phone and set up an account. (Note: This is not the same as setting up an account with Chamberlin or Liftmaster. (I discovered that the hard way.) 2. Write down the serial number off the back of the unit. You will need that. 3. Plug the cables into the device. (Power and Ethernet cable) This device will live by your router and is hardwired to it. The videos I found said the blue power light will illuminate. On mine, it flashed for a moment when I applied power and then remains out. The green light will start blinking and go solid in a very short amount of time, at least in my case. It is now ready. 3. When you begin the setup in the app, you will find "Smart Garage Hub" in the devices. Do Not pick Garage Door. Once you select smart garage hub you will see pictures of the various types. Pick the one that looks like the 828LM and follow the prompts to enter the serial number you wrote down previously. When you get to the prompt, hit "allow for home data". Other settings can be adjusted later if you want. I left them at whatever the default was. (During setup, I did rename mine garage door.) 4. When it is time for pairing, you will go out to the garage and either press the YELLOW pairing button on the ceiling opener, or if your wired wall button has a learn button under the smoke cover you can press that twice instead of climbing a ladder to get to the learn (yellow) button on the motor. Be prepared for this in advance so you know what you will need to do. When I did mine, I began with the door open. Once I got the message that the pairing was complete, I could see in the app the door was open. It didn't work immediately so I closed the door with the button and after that it worked as expected. Maybe I just didn't wait long enough or it didn't like the door being open to begin with, but after that it has worked flawlessly. When you send a close command through the app, there is a delay. the light blinks the door beeps to alert anyone that it is about to close. This is a safety feature and not a flaw. It would allow time for someone to get out of the way of the door. Also, from what I understand, you can control multiple doors, (or gates), with the one internet gateway as well as installing this app in multiple phones, such as your spouse. So, you could have three doors and control them all with one gateway. They MUST have a yellow learn button on the ceiling motor and say My Q with no other verbage with the My Q lettering on the side of the ceiling motor. Any time the door is open or closed, even when it is not through the app, you can be notified of its status unless you disable that notification. Anyplace your phone has an internet connection, you can control the operation of the door. (You're at the grocery store and don't remember if you closed the door. You can check the app and close it if you forgot, or open it for someone if needed.)

I bought this because my sister accidentally left her garage door opened overnight; and being unaware of this the contents therein were burglarized. That's when I bought might. I also received a good amount of deliveries and I liked how I'd be able to remotely open my garage door to give others access. The setup of the unit really was a breeze, largely because it required an Ethernet (as opposed to a WiFi) connection to your network. However, I admit that setup was slightly confusing with two separate installation documents provided. Wisely I think, I watched two YouTube videos that ironed out the installation sequence "hands-on." I have a new 3-module (TP-Link) mesh whole home network system, and like at least one other here, was concerned because the two Ethernet ports on the module connected to my ISP's modem were obviously being used (1 IN from the modem, 1 OUT to an 8-port Ethernet switch), and the instructions state to connect this product to the router. HOWEVER, I found that the two Ethernet ports on one of my other two remaining modules worked perfectly, and simply used one of those. I received the solid green light (confirming connection) immediately. PERFECT! Registering the unit on the web was easy, and even going to my garage to press the "LEARN" buttons separately on each of my two garage door openers (I have two, one for the left and right, resp., outwardly-open garage doors) took ONLY the requisite two (on each) presses (they were the wall units; if you go to the motor unit on your ceiling it is a single press). I then downloaded the app and very intuitively and within seconds set up an alert that should either of my doors be open for more than 10 minutes, I'd get both a push and email notification. That's exactly what I wanted. Lastly, I very much like the idea that should I get a mid-day delivery that includes my being in contact with the deliverer, OR, I can contact a neighbor, I can now open either my L or R garage doors and have them place the package or large box or furniture inside my garage. Of course it's a big help that I have a security cam on the garage door. Ultimately, this product and its attendant app does precisely what I wanted and expected it to do. EMBARRASSINGLY, I've actually owned it since mid-July, but just installed it here mid-December. OK, so that's on me and my ubiquitous procrastination. But I truly don't know why I waited so long because after I took 15 minutes to read the documentation and find a couple of online videos, the full process of adding two "devices" (my left and right garage door openers, separately) took all of maybe 10 minutes. And now I have great peace of mind!

Product was easy to set up, and easy to use. Just read the directions. It must be hardwired to the internet, and it connects MyQ devices wirelessly. It requires a MyQ account to use remote monitoring and control on mobile devices via the MyQ mobile app. All that being said, this product has a MAJOR downside - SECURITY, or lack of of it! This device is a WIRELESS GATEWAY which cannot be accessed, managed, nor secured by the user whatsoever. This wireless gateway connects to MyQ devices, but Chamberlain refuses to disclose what type, if any, of wireless security standard is being used. It also connects to the MyQ Service, but Chamberlain refuses to disclose any information on the encryption protocols used to connect to the service. * Is the status of a garage door being open or closed being transmitted in PLAIN TEXT to the MyQ service? No one at Chamberlain could say one way or the other! WHAAAT? Chamberlain only provides scripted answers such as "proprietary information cannot be disclosed." So is Chamberlain developing their own encryption algorithms? If so, SCARY! If not, then why not simply disclose the use of proven encryption methodologies? Or even worse, is encryption even being used? With the rise of hacking of (IOT) Internet Of Things devices, Chamberlain should do everything possible to secure these devices. Not only are these wireless gateways a point of vulnerability on the network, but they are also a point of vulnerability to physical home security. Chamberlain product documentation as well as Chamberlain phone support is of little help. In fact it seems the (CSRs) Customer Service Representatives at Chamberlain purposefully try to avoid answering the question, and even seem to attempt to cloud the issue with meaningless technobabble and unrelated documentation. After several phone calls to technical support and many emails, it is my personal opinion this company is in no way concerned with the security of these devices, nor the security concerns of customers. Chamberlain also makes LiftMaster, Craftsman (rebranded Chamberlain), and Clicker. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT NOR ANY MYQ GATEWAY DEVICE

My MyQ garage door opener’s Wi‑Fi module stopped working, and since I rely on Amazon’s in‑garage delivery, I needed to get it fixed. I first bought a “new” replacement on eBay, but it wouldn’t connect at all. After some digging, I found out it was manufactured in 2013, and Chamberlain changed their servers in 2015, so older models try to reach servers that no longer exist and will never work. They can't even be reflashed with new firmware unfortunately. The one I ordered here on Amazon was made in 2025, and it worked immediately as soon as I powered it up and paired it. I keep it in my upstairs office near my router, and it has no trouble reaching the garage. It’s hard‑wired, so there’s no Wi‑Fi setup to mess with. I have had a few Amazon garage deliveries since installing it and it worked flawlessly. The downside is that Chamberlain still doesn’t allow third‑party integrations. To get around that, I also use a Tailwind IQ3 2.0, which can decode the SecureCode 2.0 my opener uses and wires inline with the wall control. If I didn’t need the Amazon delivery feature, I would have just stuck with the Tailwind since it integrates with Home Assistant, Alexa, Google, and other systems with local control.

Overall this is a very simple and utilitarian approach to automatic your garage door. I purchased the Chamberlain MYQ-G0201 Universal Smartphone Garage Door Control and it **never** worked at all, so I was hesitant to try again but I really wanted to be able to remotely open the garage in order to give people access to the house or let them leave a package. Installation was incredibly easy. I connected the 828LM to an empty RJ45 port on the switch plugged into our home router, then plugged in the power cord. The light turned green after about 10s, then I registered for an account on the Chamberlain MyQ site. The account confirmation link in my email took me to a web page that asked me to stand near the garage door opener (a Liftmaster 888LM with MyQ logo). I did that and nothing seemed to happen so I pressed the learn button for a few seconds and the web page said I was connected. From there everything was smooth except that the iOS app seemed to get into a crazed state where it kept trying to get me to set up a scheduled door close, but when I canceled out the schedule model popped up again. I finally deleted and reinstalled the iOS app and all worked smoothly. But that hiccup cost the product 1 star. I also linked our Nest account via the MyQ app but the integration is a little weird and only seems to allow you to switch between "Home" and "Away" modes on the Nests (we have 3 and all 3 are toggled simultaneously). So the account linking is pretty useless.

Works great, just as advertised

I was really intrigued by the idea of being able to use an app to monitor the state of our garage door and lights as well as be able to turn lights on and off remotely. When paired with the Liftmaster 888LM wall control and a couple of Liftmaster 823LM light switches, I now have some cool capabilities, all without having to switch out our existing LM garage door opener (circa 2009). If you already have a newer Liftmaster/Chamberlain Garage Door Opener with myQ 2.0 support, then the 888LM isn't necessary. Adding in the 828LM Internet Gateway was an incredibly easier installation, just having to plug it into power and connected it to a free Ethernet port on our router. Download the app, set up an account tied to an email address, enter the serial number and now I can control the garage door from an iOS or Android device. I even set it up to record opening and closing times of our garage door and to send an alert. Finally, I also installed a couple of the 823LM light switches and programmed them to the Homelink controls in the car (for our recent car) and to a key fob for the older car. Having added the lights, now we can drive up and turn on the light on the porch or all the lights in the garage. And at night, I can check the app and if we have forgotten to turn off the porch light or the garage lights, I can check the status and if they are on I can turn them off without getting out of bed. Likewise, if I hear a noise outside, I can turn on the outside lights, check the security monitor to our outside cameras and see if anything is there. With just these few upgrades, it feels like I have a really cool smart home. My only wish would be for a few more features in the app such as the ability to schedule lights to turn on and off, for way to check the status of the lights without having to open the app, or an ability to lock the garage door opener for a period of time so it won't open even with commands from remotes (say when we are going out of town for a while). Even still, I'm very happy with our purchases of the 888LM/828LM/823LM.
